Trekking in India offers you the opportunity of getting close to nature and to explore the geographical diversities. I spent 5 years in Maharashtra and did some of the best treks of my life.

In this blog post I have compiled list of top trek destinations I have been to, which are spread across Himalayas to western ghats.

Western Ghats destinations

1. Prabalmachi

Level -Easy

Days required-1

Nearest station- Panvel, Navi Mumbai

Guided- yes

Prabalmachi is a small village hidden in the hills located very close to the Panvel city. It offers picturesome background of two mountain ranges of Sahyadris. Kalavantin durg and mighty prabalgad are two ranges standing tall overlooking the village.

Hike up to the village of prabalmachi is an easy level and passes through the green trails during the monsoon season.

Walking in the woods during monsoon is an beautiful experience. Climbing up to the village could be tiring but the view from the top will make all pain worth it.

2. Rajmachi

Level – Medium

Days required – 1, 2 if camping

Nearest station- Lonavala

Guided – No. Done self

Nestled above twin hills of Lonavala and Khandala in Maharashtra, Rajmachi fort is one of the popular treks in Sahyadri hills.

Its breathtaking natural beauty and stunning landscapes appeal to nature lovers. Rajmachi has its historic charm as well which will draw history lovers attention for sure. It is one of the most fascinating historic structure which has witnessed rule of several kingdoms.

There are two hiking routes up to the Rajmachi fort. The easiest one runs via lonavala. It is one day trek but can be extended to 2 days if you wish to camp.It is a well marked trek with 10 km long stretch, most of the trail is flat with lush green hills, valleys and forests all around.

3. Devkund

Level – Easy

Days required – 1

Nearest station – Mangaon 30 kms and Lonavala 82 kms

Guided- yes

Devkund is a little waterfall hidden in the jungle. It is Located near Bhira in Raigad district. Entire trek takes around 2.5 hours to 3 hours.

The forest around jungle is beautifully green and dense with many species of animals and birds. The waterfall of Devkund is mostly unknown and unexplored in Maharashtra. The trek passes through some unexplored trails. Once you reach the waterfall, you will be overwhelmed with the beauty of this place.

The water pool under the waterfall has bluish green water. Avoid swimming right under the waterfall. Due to heavy amount of force many drowning incidents have been reported here.

Trekking in Himalayas

4. Triund

Level -Medium / Difficult during heavy snow

Days required – 2

Nearest station – Pathankot is nearest station to Mcleodganj and is situated 90 kms away

Guided – No(Pre-booked camps)

Triund is small hill station in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It is in foothill of Dhauladhar range. Triund is 10 kms from Mcleodganj .

Trekking for triund starts from Galu which can be reached by taxi or bus from Mcleodganj. You can start from Galu temple or Mcleodganj itself depending on how much you want to walk. We preferred taxi up to the temple of Galu to save our energy.


5. Nag Tibba

Level – Medium

Days required – 2

Nearest station – Dehradun

Guided – yes

Nag Tibba(3,022 metres) is the highest peak in the lesser himalayan region of Uttarakhand state and lend its name to the ‘Nag Tibba Range’ .

Though nag tibba is year around destination but the best time to visit is late September-March. However mid November-march is also a good season for Nag tibba trekking.

Distance from base village Pantwari to base camp is 5.5 km. Initial trek passed through goat village and then continues spur of the mountains.

6. Prashar Lake

Level -Medium / Difficult during heavy snow

Days required-2

Nearest station- Mandi,Himachal Pradesh

Guided- yes

Parashar lake lies 49 km north of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India, with a three storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to the sage Prashar.

Lake has unpredictable weather from snow laiden mountains to bright sunshine filled days. You can trek throughout the year .Weather at parashar will be same as Mandi. Highest parashar temperature is 21C and lowest -8C.

Along the way you will cross beautiful rivers and densely forested Himalayan hills. At some points trail opens up to some of the most beautiful meadows and you get to experience beautiful vistas of snow covered peaks. After trekking for approx one hour, you are in mid of snow everywhere. Believe me its no less than a winter wonderland
