Rewinding to my time in Mcleodganj, I find myself in a thriving pahadi town with a crowd that one will find in any artsy corner of the country— whether it’s Arambol in Goa or Kalaghoda in Bombay. But at the same time, I also find myself in a hostel that is overcrowded and whose walls are peeling off. As much as I loved Mcleodganj, my hostel stay is surely a part of my trip that I would love to forget about.
So, before I go back to the hill station, I have decided to do a little research and curated this list of homestays, that are not only pocket friendly but have a charm that invites you in!
1. Be Happy Guest House
The name struck me first! Of course, I want to ‘Be Happy’ and this guest house promises a beautiful garden, mountain views and free wi-fi. The budget-friendly deal makes me even happier!
Price: Approx. Rs 999 per night
2. Anandam Homestay
The homestay describes itself as ‘A Wandertrails Stay’ and it is apt. The property is located in such a rustic landscape and is sure to have various trails that one can wander about in.
Price: Approx. Rs 1,200 per night
3. Ram Yoga Guest House
A dreamy view to start learning yoga! This property has some of the best reviews on Booking.com. The selling point here - a glass yoga studio overlooking the Himalayas! Doesn’t that sound perfect?
Price: Approx. Rs 2,000 per night
4. The Cocoon
The cosy vibes of this property and boho inspired decor drew me in through photos. The reviews of this property raved about comfortable home cooked meals and good coffee to sip while admiring the view outside the window. The fireplace in the evenings promise to be the ideal set up for storytelling and making new friends!
Price: Approx. 2,000-3,000 per night
5. Ekant Niwaz
This property looks newly set up but is located close to the HPCA stadium (which is known for it’s views!) The garden, the swing set, the rustic brick walls, and roof windows, made me want to give this a chance! What do you think?
Price: Approx. 1,000 per night
6. Triund View Camps and Homestay
A homestay and a camp? Sounds like so much fun! The place has an in-house restaurant, a lovely garden and good wi-fi. The guests who opt for the homestay or 'bed & breakfast' enjoy a delicious vegetarian breakfast as a part of their package. But what struck me was how this place had such nice reviews about the host. Isn't that an important aspect while seeking out homestays?
Price: Approx. Rs 800 per night
7. Shalom Backpackers
The property is budget friendly, well maintained and is conveniently located. Everyone's focus these days is on cleanliness and this property ticks that off from the check list.
Price: Approx. Rs 1,000 per night
8. Junglaat Ecorganic Stays & Experiences
This property offers experiences and guided tours that the host organises himself. A perfect space for a solo traveler or small group that is looking for their own space to work, especially those looking for comfortable remote working options.
A friendly host who can introduce guests to local cultures and experiences is just an added benefit!
Price: Approx. Rs 2,000-3,000 per night
Usually I am a big fan of travel hostels and Mcleod is the space for backpacker friendly hostels. But, this time I found myself searching for homestays. Post COVID-19, the way we travel has surely changed. Keeping in mind social distancing and safety, most travellers are now seeking homestays instead of hostels. Well, you can't deny that a homestay with piping hot home-cooked meal appeals to every budget traveller.
So I have selected and added this list of 8 homestays to my travel planning journal, and you never know, this may just come in handy before your next visit to Mcleod.
