I have always been fascinated by lighthouses; partly for the way they stand tall and sequestered guarding the sea and partly for their unique and striking architecture. When I read Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse, I realised I wasn’t the only one who was enchanted by lighthouses. For the very same people who share this fascination, I have come up with a list of lighthouses in India that are worth visiting. The advent of technology has rendered a lot of these lighthouses non-functional, but you can still visit to marvel at their beauty.
Situated atop a rock, the lighthouse was built in 1887 out of natural stone and became fully functional in 1904. A spate of spiral stairs would lead one to the top from where one can get panoramic views of Mahabalipuram.
Where: Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu
In operation since 1902, this vibrant lighthouse painted in red and white oblique bands is Kerala’s tallest lighthouse. After climbing the vertiginous stairs, one can enjoy a stunning view of the Arabian Sea, Kollam City and the Ashtamudi Lake. Those who cannot climb up the stairs can take an elevator to the top.
Where: Kollam, Kerala
Nestled on top of a hillock, this secluded lighthouse is away from the hustle-bustle of tourists. One gets to admire greenery all around and the view of the Arabian Sea and the Sahyadri Hills from the top.
Where: Betul, Goa
An iconic part of Kovalam Beach, this is the tallest lighthouse in India and complements the glistening sea and Kerala’s blue skies perfectly. One can take an elevator or climb up the stairs to reach the lighthouse’s top from where spectacular views of the beach can be enjoyed.
Where: Kovalam, Kerala
Now in a withered state, this lighthouse was constructed in the 19th century by French rulers. However, a new lighthouse was constructed in the 20th century by the Government of India next to the old one. The Old Lighthouse is a testament to its French past and won’t fail to impress a history buff.
Where: Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu
Built in 1901, Kaup Lighthouse in India is situated on a rock and is the main attraction for people visiting Kaup Beach. The black-and-white lighthouse is accessible to tourists from 5 to 6:30 PM and is a great place for witnessing a sunset.
Where: Udupi, Karnataka
Located on an edge of a hill, this lighthouse in India is surrounded by lush greenery and offers breathtaking view of the sea. One needs to hike up to the lighthouse and climb up the steep ladder inside to reach the top. There is a government guest house nearby where one can stay.
Where: Sindhudurg, Maharashtra
