Kerala joins hands in the battle against climate-change and bans single-use plastic, starting January 1, 2020. The Kerala government has declared the new year will mark a permanent ban on single-use-plastic products within the state premises.
The decision came on Thursday, after a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Dealing with plastic waste is now a major global problem. Cases of environmental and health issues in Kerala due to mounting plastic waste have been on a constant rise. With this step, the state can expect some relief.
The ban prohibits the use of plastic carry bags, plastic sheets, cooling films, plastic plates, cups, thermocol and Styrofoam-based items. Violators will face heavy penalties and a possible term in jail.
Kerala has joined the bandwagon with places like Goa, Ooty and Indian Railways already acting on the ban. God’s own country hopes to look greener and breathe cleaner air with the onset of new year.
