In a move towards environmental consciousness, Kashmir recently got its first electric train!
According to sources, the train is to start operations along the Banihal-Baramulla corridor very soon. The entire 137 km long track extends from Banihal in Jammu to Baramulla district in North Kashmir. Reports also state that precautionary trial runs for the train have been conducted previously in the last month by railway authorities. The entire cost of the project is estimated to be placed at around 324 cr INR!
The train is said to be consisting of two different sections for travel. This is also a major move towards increasing the cost-effectiveness of train travel in the coming years. These train services are also a move to increase mobility across the Kashmir valley which has been a wish for locals for a long time. The Indian government also plans to connect parts of Kashmir to Kanyakumari via a train route and work on the same has been going on for a while.
