Sarhad, a non-governmental organization based in Pune, has proposed to create India's largest book village in Aragam village in North Kashmir's Bandipora district in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir government. Nestled amidst the scenic forests of the Himalayas, along the banks of Wular Lake, the village has been selected for its serene beauty that can offer solace to visitors and stimulate their creativity.

This initiative will promote literacy, reading habits, and local culture while boosting the local economy by attracting tourists. The book village will provide access to a vast collection of books and literature featuring ancient to modern works of Kashmir and showcase the region's folk culture. Visitors can interact with authors, attend book readings and discussions, and participate in various cultural and literary events. The village will also have bookstores, libraries, cafes, and other facilities for readers and writers to exchange ideas.

The NGO has planned to integrate the Book Village into the tourist circuits of Jammu and Kashmir to increase footfall and spread awareness. More than 50 households in Aragam have already volunteered to preserve books under the guidelines provided by the NGO, indicating the enthusiasm of the local community for the project.
