Very soon, Hyderabad will host the longest road tunnel in India. It's planned to exceed the current longest tunnel in India, the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel at Kashmir.
As per the latest news, the length of the tunnel will be around 10 km extending from Jubilee Hills Road No 45 Junction to Banjara Hills, Road No. 12 Junction.
Tentative plan for the tunnel
The tunnel will consist of four lanes, and it will wind around via the KBR Park junction to NFCL Junction, Punjagutta. A tunnel boring machine will be leveraged for the construction.
GHMC, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting a feasibility study.
The key reasons behind the creation of a road tunnel
The government of Telangana had the vision of executing the tunnel road construction to eliminate any felling of trees. The earlier proposal of constructing six junctions for multi-level flyovers would have resulted in the felling of almost 1500 trees.
Besides, the road tunnel will reduce the traffic congestion and ease of movement between the Jubilee Hills road junction and Banjara Hills road junction.
The construction of the road tunnel will surely bring in relief to the daily commuters in Hyderabad as well as the tourists visiting the city. Let's hope for a great transformation.
