Whenever I think of weekend plans in Gurgaon, the options mostly I get are malls and pubs, and if these are not something you like or you have a toddler along with you to entertain, the options are even more limited. So when I heard of the transport museum , I had to check it out, especially because Ayan loves vehicles as well.
The heritage transport museum in Tauru, Gurgaon is the first of its kind in India , which focuses on the history of transportation in India. The concept for this was born from the passion of collecting vintage vehicles by the founder Tarun Thakral. All the details about it can be found here.
As we entered the premise, we were welcomed by a beautiful tree of traffic lights and the tram and train engines displayed around in the premise was already a treat for Ayan. When we got into the museum building, the art gets even more enthralling.
The artefacts here are spread across 4 floors across all modes of transport.
Level 0: Automobile/Car
Level 1: Pre Mechanised Gallery & Heavy Mechanised Vehicles
Level 2: TwoWheeler, Aviation, Maritime
Level 3: Contemporary Art
With the entry ticket, the audio guide is provided free of cost and it aptly explains all the displayed collections starting from the invention of wheels.
The ground floor also has a 1930's restored railway saloon of the Jodhpur express along with a railway platform from the yesteryears . Earlier it was allowed to go inside the saloon and check the bogey but now to protect the artefacts, its been stoped. Instead you can view the entire train layout of jodhpur express in 15 mins VR movie for additional 150 bucks.
In the basement there is an auditorium which plays a 45 min long movie about the evolution of high speed transportation. It's a very interesting to discover how recent is high speed travel in human history and how steep its growth has been.
The cafeteria also has been aesthetically designed with 90s decor of a dhaba with decent enough food .It also takes you in a tour of nostalgia with the 90s advertisement playing on the TV set.
The museum is a perfect combination of information, art and entertainment. I had a toddler running around with me, and even he enjoyed the whole time, wether it were the vintage cars, the colourful jugads, the yellow school bus , the hanging contessa and best of all were the displayed train engines and tram in the open area. Ayan had a a blast exploring these vehicles and imagining driving them. This place has its charm for all age groups and offers a great opportunity to learn about the evolution of transport along the course of history.
This museum is another inspiring example of converting one's passion and vision to reality. Kudos to Mr Tarun Thakral and all the the staff members in the museum for providing such amazing experience.
