Salaulim Dam will most definitely not be on your bucket list when it comes to a trip to Goa. But away from the beaches and glitzy streets of north Goa, lies a quiet marvel in Salaulim, South Goa that's waiting to be explored. Coupled with a peaceful retreat to the beautiful beach of Agonda, and you'll find yourself having a perfect non-touristy outing.
The dam is located on Salaulim river, a tributary of Zuari. The dam is 42.7 meters high with an area of 24 square km. The wide expanse of the dam is itself a marvelous sight.
The water flows through a unique semi circular duck-billed spillway with such a force that it rises upwards in a beautiful mist and falls back into the river.
It was primarily built for irrigational and fish farming purposes, however, it is also a popular picnic spot now, due to the botanical gardens built nearby. The gardens are patterned on the Brindavan gardens of Mysore and are themselves worth a visit.
Birdwatchers would love the catchment area, as kingfishers and cormorants can be frequently spotted diving in the water and catching their prey. The reservoir area, used for fishing has also provided livelihood opportunities for the fishing community.
Location: 26 km southeast of Margao, 5 km from Sanguem town. Taxis can be hired or vehicles can be rented. Public transport is also available.
Best time to visit: Monsoon is the best time to visit the place. The overflowing water produces a beautiful mist which is a sight to behold.
Cost: The dam is open from 9 am to 6 pm. Entry charge is Rs 20. An ID proof is required for entry.
Additional information: It is recommended to carry your own snacks as the canteen only serves beverages and ice-creams.
