Unexplored Caves In India

While travelling in India, you can’t help but notice that there are many unexplored parts of the Indian terrain that will leave you breathless. I have travelled to the north and south of the country and at every step, I find a slight change in my surrounding. These changes are either related to the weather conditions, food items and topography. Many aspects of India have not yet been commercialized and you can still find natural beauty here. When it comes to exploring the Indian caves not many might pop up in your head. Apart from religious caves like Vaishno Devi and Amarnath, Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta caves are the ones that we are very well aware of. Let me throw some light on a few caves of India that are not so famous yet beautiful:

SIJU CAVE:

Siju Cave or otherwise known as the Bat Cave is located in Balpakarn National Park, Meghalaya. The cave itself is named after nearby village Siju. The cave is yet not developed but it is spacious and easy to visit. You need to take a local along to explore this cave with a prior appointment. The cave is home to a collection of ants and bats. A new kind of cave fish-Menon was also discovered here. The beautiful cave is said to be the third largest cave of India. It has some impressive stalagmites and stalactites and contains one of the finest river passages of the world. The highlight of this cave is a chamber named after Princess Diana with awesome limestone rock formations.

Mawsmai CAVE:

Mawsmai caves located in Meghalaya are the most accessible caves of India. Yet it does not cease to take your breath away. You can explore these caves without a guide. You would find these caves 6 Km away from Cherapunji. You will find a small groove on a hill and Mawsmai caves are hidden beneath these trees. The cave is spacious and well lit throughout. Once you enter the cave you cannot exit from the same spot. You need to visit the entire length of the cave to be able to exit. There are places in the cave where you have to squeeze yourself to be able to cross. Since the cave is well lit you can actually see every little detail of the rock formations. The colors and patterns feel most alive among these lights. It paints a awesome picture with water dripping from these rocks, however because of these lights a sense of adventure is taken away.

Borra CAVE:

92 km from Visakhapatnam in Araku Valley of Ananthagiri hills, you will find Borra Cave. In 1807 William King of Britain discovered this cave. The acid in the water of the river Gosthani reacts with calcium carbonate present in the limestone, thus breaking it to form caves over a period of time. Stalagmites and Stalactites are also formed in these caves giving the tourist much to imagine about. As they form different shapes, various names are given to them according to the interpretation. Borra Caves are surrounded by picturesque landscapes making it a must visit cave of India.

Bagh CAVES:

Bagh caves are situated in Madhya Pradesh in the Dhar district. These caves are not natural but are manmade. The 9 caves have various sculptures of Lord Buddha, they were sculpted as an ode to him. It is fascinating for tourists as they can see murals from 5th Century. The name of the cave literally means tiger cave. It is believed that villagers and people from several tribes were scared to go to these tribes since they believed tigers resided in these caves.

BARABAR CAVES:

Barabar caves are the oldest rock cut caves in India. Situated in Jehanabad district of Bihar, have inscriptions dated back to Ashokan period. Tourist can find many Hindu and Jain sculptures here. It is believed that these caves have been carved out of huge boulders. What might fascinate you are the big arches and two chambers in all the caves here. There are four caves in total names- Lomas Rishi, Karan Chaupar, Sudama and Vishwa Zopri. You must visit them to see for yourself the architectural design of the Mauryan period.

EDAKKAL CAVES:

Edakkal caves located in north Kerala is a walk down the memory lane. In the cave you will find inscriptions of animal figures and cave drawings of wheels, knives, bows and so on. They are natural rock formations formed by a huge split in large rock. You will find the early signs of human habitations in these caves. These caves in Ambukuthi Hills have inscriptions similar to those found in the caves in European Alps and Africa. In the land of the Gods, you might just find the ancient man.

JOGIMARA CAVES:

Located in Chattisgarh, in the Narmada region lies Jogimara caves. These beautiful caves have a great history behind. It was considered to be the dressing room for the actresses taking part in the ancient theatre- SitaBengra. Though the caves are small artificially carved rock chamber, you will find inscriptions and paintings from the Circa on the walls and ceilings of these caves. Apart from the natural beauty of these caves it is a well known site for the ancient theatre.
