A weekend is all it takes for Delhiites who love the hills! We were 4 friends all wanting a break from our mundane jobs. We left on a Friday night from Delhi in our Swift at around 8 pm. My husband and Debo took turns to drive while Shreyas and I enjoyed being driven around. We took the Ghaziabad - Moradabad highway (NH-9), drove along singing our favourite songs and took chai-sutta breaks after every 2-3 hours. The weather was cool and windy which we realized during the breaks. We had late dinner at a dhaba around midnight. The road was broken a many places and it wasn't a smooth drive but this wasn't bothering us as we were in a total holiday mood. In the morning we reached Nainital. The journey was an experience in itself full of early morning views of the hills and random pit stops at small water streams along the road.
The weather was cool and the sight of the hills just made our day. We parked our car at the public parking and walked uphill towards the Mall road for a ravishing breakfast of Maggi , break pakode , aloo chatt and omlette. The hill station was very crowded and we heard that ATMs had run out of cash and many people had slept in their cars as most of the hotels were full.
We had booked a home stay in advance and were surprised to find a lovely dalmation welcoming us at the home stay.
We dropped dead in our beds due to the overnight exertion. After a proper nap in the blankets we got out for a walk along the hills in the late afternoon. We explored the local shops and eateries and later went boating into the Nainital lake. The vastness of the lake and the view was simply beautiful and worth remembering! We were lost in the silence and calmness of the lake.
We came back late at night for the drinks and dance session in our room.
Next day we left and started our backward journey. We took a diversion towards the Jim Corbett National Park. We spent time scouting the market and shops near the boundaries of the national park so as to plan a trip when we had more days by our side.
The drive back from Nainital to Delhi was nostalgic and sad. It was hard bidding farewell to the lush green hills covered with clouds.
There are certainly many more places to explore near Nainital, but we were short of time. So that was it, our 2 day trip!
