Rightly called, the Scotland of India, Coorg’s silent charm is a trekker’s haven. The trekking routes through tea and coffee plantations lead you to some of the most stunning destinations in the Western Ghats. The rippling of a white cascade at Bettigiri is music to ears as you pitch a tent here and prepare for bonfire and barbeque snacks.

A wonderous crown jewel of Dharamshala, embraced by the surreal Dhauladhar Range, Triund is a moderate 6 hours trek from Mcleodganj. The star-studded sky at Triund is nature’s bounty waiting at the hill top. Tents can be carried along and rented at the top. Wake up to the dew laden trees at the height of 1,479 meters amidst the evergreens of the Nandi Hills. 60kms from the city of Bengaluru, with migrant species of flycatchers and thrushes found on the hillslopes as you trek up, Nandi Hills was rightly called Anandagiri, the hill of happiness, in ancient India.

Best time to visit: Nandi hills can be visited throughout the year except the rainy season.

Do check the temperature rating on the sleeping bag when prepare yourself to spend a night in shivering cold at the Chembra peak. 17kms from Kalpetta, Chembra Peak at 2100 meters, is the tallest peak of the region and calls for a venturesome full day trek to reach the summit. Although backpackers require an official permission at Meppady for camping, immense photographic opportunities await you as you cross the heart shaped lake midway.

Amdist the pines, Sillery Gaon is perfect Himalayan place for camping in India, only about 96 kms from New Jalpaiguri via Kalimpong. Against the mighty Kunchunjenga, this little haven for exotic birds is an excellent spot for birdwatching.
