I am a swimmer and love water sports. I had always had this dream of learning how to surf. Since in India there are very few surf schools and most of them are in South India, I could not manage to go and learn. But due to the lockdown in Maharashtra (because of Covid situation), I got a week off at work and I thought of utilizing this time to make my dream come true.
I made a quick plan to visit Mulki, where very first surf school of India was established. Mulki is a small village on the west coast in Karnataka. There are mainly 2 surf schools - Mantra Surf School and Indica Surf School. I got admission at Indica Surf School and took a 'Surfing for Beginners' course of 3 days.
How I reached -
The nearest railway station is Mulki (3kms) and nearest airport is Mangalore (30kms). Since there was no direct train to Mangalore from Pune, I decided to book Mangaluru SF Special train from Mumbai. I reached Mangalore on second day at 1pm. After reaching there, at first, I had lunch at ‘New Jal Mahal Cafe’ and then went to Decathlon for shopping. Due to lockdown in Maharashtra, I could not buy anything for this trip. For surfing lesions, you must have a rash guard and a sunscreen. I bought essentials and took a public bus to Mulki which costed me Rs.35.
After reaching Mulki at 5pm, I checked in school got freshen up and went out for a walk. I found an amazing spot on the banks of the backwater to watch sunset. I must say, it was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen!
Surf Sessions -
Next day in the morning, I had breakfast. Mr. Jayraj, a certified surf instructor, took us for our first session. Indica surf school provide pick and drop facility to the beach. Session starts at 8am. First half an hour we used to warm up. Mr. Jayraj gave us detailed instructions about how to surf.
In 3 days of surfing course, you can learn to surf with concise.
1.You can learn how to paddle
2.How to stand up
3.How to ride whitewater waves.
This session lasted for 4 hours, followed by next 2 days.
I could not believe but I learned surfing in this course and the experience was out of the world!
Homestay and other activities –
The Indica surf school has their own homestay where they have private and dorm rooms as well. They offer 3 - time homemade meal with other beverages. The food is simply delicious and nutritious which revives you after a day’s play and learning by the water.
There are many more activities you can do after morning surfing session. Right from kayaking and stand-up paddling in the backwaters to cycling and camping on the beach, the experience was second to none. The volunteers are super friendly, the instructors are extremely professional and well trained. They also offer good wi-fi. If you are looking for a workstation away from home, this could be a great place.
