A non scary Cobra:-
A Cobra lily in Asia or jack in the pulpit in West or Saanp kakdi /Chamush in India,, Genus Ariseama includes over 100 species of this snake look alike plant.
I don't know which species is this in photo which we took during our trek to Vyash shikar in Uttrakhand recently, but you will definitely fall in love with this plant at the first look itself due to its unusual appearance. Apart from it's appearance , another most striking trait of this plant is its ability to change sex. Yes, you heard it right!!!!! During early year of its life, the plant is Male and later in life the plant may become female or hermaphrodite. This ability is due to its adaptation towards nutritional or reproductive needs.
On maturity, this plant produces red/green berries, which is said to be toxic due to presence of some acid. You can see that in the picture. In native language it is called as "Saanp Kakdi" or "Chamush". As we were talking to some children there, they told us that Gujjars residing in deoban forest areas eat this "Saanp kakdi ki sabji".
