Backpackers Paradise!

Right across a river near HAMPI (also called as Hospet), Karnataka was a hidden gem named "Hippie Island"

Yes, "Was" it is totally demolished now.

We were group of 8. Hampi does not have a railway station. The nearest Railway station is Hospet, which is around 12 km from Hampi. To reach hippie island we had to hire a taxi/tuk-tuk from Hospet and reach Tungabhadra river near the Virupaksha temple in Hampi. Take tickets for ferry/boat (5 minutes ride). The boat starts from 8:00 AM till 5:30 PM. I have seen people crossing the river till 8:30 PM in the night in small coracles.

It was July and a very pleasant weather, actually drizzling all the time. The river view, perfect for clicks, check out our snaps

After landing on the other side of the river, there was a climb/trek of about 3 kms. It was pretty busy way with of backpackers (specially from foreign land) and then there were hippies- high on life and stuff, of course!

So we all started hiking upside and it was beautiful, there were small vendors selling pretty handmade souvenirs, accessories, dream catchers etc. Once we reached the top lot of dealers surrounded us to give 2 wheelers on rent to go around the place.

'Hippie island' as the name goes was totally for people with hippie vibes. A whole stretch was filled with Cafes, various colors and themes. Below is the list of few cafes we visited:

Nargila café

The most soothing place for its relaxed vibes, river view and good food. We ordered Arabian hukkah and lots of food and played board games for hours. There are cottages here, very cosy and budget friendly. Nothing like luxury stay, just basic with all amenities. They often have live music along with all sorts of global cuisines. Hummus-Pita was the best serve here.

Chilled here till 3 in the morning!

Mowgli Café

The night scenes here are good. Candlelight dinner, good food, music and of course a lot of backpackers. This café welcome visitors to get their own booze/bottle & stuff and they provide some yummy food.

Laughing Buddha Café

This is the most famous of all. Almost all the backpackers have this cafe listed in their to-go list. Unfortunately, we did not click many pictures here & that's cause we were high enough to just enjoy the peace and nature.

The seating was facing toward fields and due to rain there was this small lake build up. The scene was just perfect for a laid back evening.

Few other things we did:

1. Visited end of the island, over the rocks.

2. Met foreigners and exchanged few cultural talks

3. Met a couple (somewhere from Europe), backpacking in India. They were heading to Goa next afternoon.

4. And of course, SHOPPING!!! Lot of great things to shop. Dreamcatchers, hippie Psychedelic clothing, specially the harems, unique music instruments etc...

Well, those who visited this zoned out hidden gem, lucky were those!! For the rest, keeping looking for such hidden gems;
