For me Northeast India was always a place that I thought I will cover it someday, because its right there; however I realized that I probably will never visit these states because its so close and I will keep stalling it. So finally this time I decided to do a quick budget trip to Northeast. I decided to do Assam and a bit of Arunachal in 14 days. People asked me what on earth is there in Assam? More often than not, just because I have not been to a place is good enough reason for me to visit it….but Assam has 2 world heritage site, one the largest river island in the world and second one of the country’s best national park and home to the biggest population of one horned Rhinos, plus the food is mind blowing so that is reason enough to visit the state atleast once. About Arunachal, agreed that Tawang region is very scenic and no wonder it is one of the most popular destination, however next time would love to explore the non Buddhist side of Arunachal, to see the different tribes and cultures. Loads of mishaps in this trip but on the hindsight it was all fun and added to the adventure. There is so much more to cover and see in Northeast, this is just a very small glimpse of the wonder that these states are.
It was just a transit place. From here we moved to Majuli and while returning back took our flights from here.
The only way to reach Majuli is to take a ferry from Nemmati Ghat, which is half an hour drive from Jorhat town. The ferry charges Rs 80 per person (as of Jan 2015) and takes 1.5hrs to reach Majuli. the ferry is stuffed with people, bikes, cars, jeeps, so ensure that you climb on top and get a nice place to enjoy the view. Majuli is the world's largest river island and home to a lot of ethnic tribe, the most prominent being the Missing tribe. We stayed at Le Maison De Anand, which is bamboo cottages in same style as the Missing tribe homes. Best way to explore Majuli is on a bike, just ride around, see a few Satras and do visit the tribal village.
Its home to the largest population of one horned Rhinos, but apart from that I loved the park for the safaris. The jeep safari was great and we saw quite a few species of birds and animals. Stayed at Jupuri Ghar and loved the place and the food there. The elephant safari was totally worth it.
Dirang is a small town, which mainly serves as a stop over before continuing the journey to Tawang. There is a hotspring there and the drive to Sangti valley is quite pleasant.
Tawang is a buddhist town surrounded by mountains. the highlight of the town is the massive monastery, which is second largest in Asia. The War memorial in honour of the 2000+ Indian army war heroes who fell in the 1962 Indo China war is something else. I loved outskirts of Tawang, the lakes, the drives was just beautiful
Shungetsri lake, popularly known as Madhuri lake because of a bollywood movie that was shot here. The lake was created a s a result of an earthquake and it is breathtakingly beautiful. There are these migratory birds known as Golden ducks, which come from England to this lake.
Its a China border from where you see the Chinese highway and the peaks. Go for the drive if not for anything else.
After the backbreaking journey, this was an awesome place to relax sore muscles and do nothing. The tourist lodge here is great, very close to the river and the food is good. It was nice to be here for a day or two to just chill.
