Hiee guys, I have recently travelled KERALA- GOD’s OWN COUNTRY, solo in the month of October,2019. I tried to cover almost all famous destinations of Kerala in just 7 days and with the budget of 14k only. So, its very easy to discover KERALA, very budget friendly.

This blog is specially for students and people who prefer to travel economically. Here, are some rules cum suggestions which will help you to arrange pocket friendly tour of KERALA and may be other destinations also.

Accomodation:

Guys, hostels are like blessings for us. You will get hostels in most of the tourist places of kerala. There are many benefits of it apart from budget friendly. We can get to know about other travellers from across the world and make new friends. and its very safe for female solo traveller also. One can get enough services like clean bed, blanket,ac, attached bathroom with hot water and may be small cafe for quick hot snacks.

Homestays are good alternatives to hostels. One can get plenty of homestays in each n every place of kerala. Believe me guys, i didnt had any issue regarding safety .

Very low budget hotel options are there in kerala with enough safety and services.

One can book the each option in the range of 300-800 rupee per one night stay.

Transportation:

There is very good service of kerala state transport buses between all major tourist places. Rarely one can need to change bus, otherwise its very easy to get direct buses from one destination to another. One good application is there, named ‘aanavandi’ which will show all the schedules of state transport buses with enough details of fair and destinations in between with timings. Most of the buses were on time when i explored kerala.

One good tip to travel in state transport bus is to catch early morning bus which starts from the same destination so it will be very easy to get seats and such buses remain on time also.

Try to book your hostels or homestays or hotels near bus-stands only. So it will be very easy to reach at stations by walking only without any help of auto-rikshaws or taxies .So one can save money for that early morning taxi or auto-rikshaws.

There is customer helpline number and you can get required information of bus at inquiry room at bus-stations one day before your journey. Fares varies depend upon the distance covered and type of bus like local, super fast , ac bus etc. But these fare rates are minimum.

Food:

Food is very cheap in Kerala. One can get his or her tummy full with the meal costing less than 150-200 rupees. Enough options are there for veg and non-veg. Some small restaurants get open early morning around 5:30 am. So one can have traditional South Indian breakfast before catching the early morning bus.

Kerala-Backwaters:

Backwaters are the unique integral part of the Kerala. I choose to explore Kerala because I wanted to experience back-waters. It was amazing to explore how local people carry their routine life-style through back-waters. Two options are there to experience this.

Houseboat :

One can get plenty of houseboats with different facilities and services in different cities of Kerala. There are two downsides having these commercial houseboats. One is that they are costly & second is that they offer limited time duration if you try to cut down the charges. I wanted to experience very budget friendly houseboat ride, not at the expense of the lengh of route, duration and scenery around. So there is very good option available for travellers like us. Government ferry runs between KOTTAYAM and ALLEPPY. It takes approximate 2:30 to 3 hours to reach from one destination to another destination, with a ticket fare of just 17 rupees. Beauty of this route is so stunning. Have some snacks with you and enjoy this unique ride from narrow canals to big rivers to very big lakes. I didn’t feel any excitement for night stay in houseboats. So I avoided it.

CANOEING:

Second option is canoeing to explore back-waters. If you are nature-lover and want to explore small villages of Kerala, ‘ MUNRO ISLAND’ is the destination. Here, one can experience canoeing at affordable prices of 400-600 per person for 2-3 hours. I was so proud of my plannings that I included this to my itinerary.

Local transportation:

Avoid hiring auto or taxies if you are going to any nearby place within a city. Instead try to reach there by walking only or you can use city bus. This will save unnecessary expenses of local transportation. For example

Merari beach is just 12-15 km from alleppy. If one takes auto, it will charge you around 250-300 rupee each way. But if you take city private bus or government bus, ticket is just 15 rupee per person.

Taxi or auto fare from Trivendrum to Kovalam beach is around 300 rupee each way but if u take government bus, tickets are very less.

Therefore, you should consider your expenses approximately 2000 per day. Average accomodation cost is 600 per night, food cost is maximum 600 per day if you are foody much. Remaining 800 , one can use for KSRTC bus, local transportation in auto or taxi, entry tickets if any, etc.

So, pack your bagpack and explore Kerala . I m here to guide you guys, if you find any query. Feel free to ask and you can follow me on Facebook and Instagram for more interesting travel diaries and much more .
