The famous saying goes, “everything is essential, only some things are more than others.” You will have no idea of what you actually need and how little you use when you’re sitting at home. Everyone says pack light, but the vast majority of backpackers don't until they have learnt the hard way. Five essentials you need while backpacking India:
Clothing – Based on the terrain you are traveling to you can choose your clothing. India is generally known to be humid and it’s advisable to carry cotton clothes in light colours. You can also carry wind cheaters, convertible trousers and ultra light weight jackets for all weathers.
Footwear – A pair of sandals and ankle length hiking boots should get you around almost anywhere in India. If your idea is to pack light then consider these your best options.
Electronics – A camera or a laptop need not be a crucial necessity. Carry a smart phone that has good camera features. Checking for information and booking bus/train tickets online through the smart phone can solve most of your problems.
Utility – Carrying a sleeping bag and a sleeping mat is a must. You can convert almost any surface into a sleeping area with these two essentials. Add to this a good water container/bottle, torch, towel, knife, spoon, an India road map atlas book and a basic first aid kit.
Backpack – A 40 to 60 litres backpack should be enough to keep you on the road and safely carry your baggage around all terrains and weather conditions. Invest in a good backpack that makes it lighter for you to carry your baggage. Your comfort level for moving around places depends on the kind of backpack you carry.
