4 Pet-Friendly Airlines in India That Every 'Paw-rent' Should Know About!

If you are a paw-rent, then this is for you as much as it is for me (I have pets)!!

As we celebrated National Pet Day on the 11th of April, it also brought to light the onerous efforts that ‘paw-rents’ (as we all prefer calling ourselves) take to include pets in their travel plan.

Travelling with pets in India is still a nightmare (a lot of paw-rents would agree with me) and any option that makes travel smoother, is always welcome.

While Indian train travel with pets have been highlighted in a lot of places (even I have written about pet travel by train) clarity on travel by flight still remains a topic of extensive research that has already left a lot unanswered. In India, few airlines cater to pet travel, but we may just be aware of 1 (I know of only Air India). Here I am listing all the pet-friendly airlines that make travel stress-free not only for the pets but their parents too.

Please note that these guidelines are only for pet travel and not travelling with service animals.

1. Vistara

• Are they allowed in the cabin? No

• If yes, then what is the permissible weight and size of the dog/cat? NA

• If not in a cabin, how will they travel? Pets will be allowed in the cargo compartment as checked-in baggage. For restrictions, detailed guidelines and assistance please contact Vistara’s customer service.

2. Akasa

• Are they allowed in the cabin? Yes

• If yes, then what is the permissible weight and size of the dog/cat? cats and dogs aged three months or older.

• If not in a cabin, how will they travel? Cargo compartment as checked-in baggage.

• Additional Information: For a hassle-free experience, it's recommended to arrange pet travel bookings at least 48 hours prior to departure. Moreover, securing a verified vaccination and health certificate from a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of travel is crucial. This certificate remains effective for up to 15 days from the date of issuance, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulations.

3. Air India

• Are they allowed in the cabin? Yes.

• If yes, then what is the permissible weight and size of the dog/cat? Only up to 5 kgs

• If not in a cabin, how will they travel? Cargo compartment as checked-in baggage.

• Additional Information: To arrange travel for your pet, simply bring them to the check-in counter along with the required travel case and paperwork to purchase a ticket. Alternatively, bookings can be made at Air India’s airline or city ticketing offices. It's essential to make the reservation at least 72 hours before departure for pets traveling in the cabin, and multi-city bookings are not permitted for pet travel. Charges for pet travel include standard excess baggage fees based on weight or piece, depending on factors such as the pet's weight, the container's weight, and any additional belongings. Air India permits domesticated dogs and cats in both the passenger cabin and the cargo hold, subject to approval. Certain breed restrictions and age requirements apply, and pets must have necessary health documentation. Pet carriers must meet specific size requirements, and labeling each carrier with the pet’s name is recommended for safety. Sedating pets is discouraged, and food items are prohibited inside the container. Ensure you have all required documentation, including vaccination and health certificates, and be aware of any additional requirements for international travel with your pet.

4. Indigo

• Are they allowed in the cabin? Not known

• If yes, then what is the permissible weight and size of the dog/cat? Na

• If not in a cabin, how will they travel? Cargo compartment as checked-in baggage.

What are the documents required for pet travel?

• Health certificate

• Vaccination record

• Microchip

• Proof of residence

P.S. – It is always advisable to contact the respective airline’s customer service for information on pet travel; the requirements and policies may differ for each.

For any ‘paw-rent’, thoroughly researching different airlines and comparing pet policies is a must, before embarking on a journey via flight. Although trains policies are easy to navigate and more comfortable for pets, travel time increases 4 to 6 times.
