Remember the song Gherua....of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in Dilwale? And needless to say, the first thing that strikes to your eyes and mind, is the beauty of the wreckage of the plane where the song was picturized.

Ever wondered where it is?

It is in South Iceland, a country some 8300 KMs from India.

But do you think the producers were so cruel to find beauty in the wreckage of the plane to picturize a romantic number around it?

No doubt, it is wreckage of a plane which in all probability looks like it crashed there and all the passengers must have died, isn't it? Hold your breath, the fact is, when the plane ran out of fuel, it was crash landed on the black beach by the pilot to save the passengers and all were safe.

Wanna go there and click some pictures, Shahrukh Khan style?

How does one go to the Black Beach then? Where is it? and how far? What are the other attractions to see here for a backpacker?

The Black Beach is in the village of Vik in Iceland. One needs to first go to Reykjavik and from there you can head to Vik, which is approx a 2 hour drive, to see this Black Sand Beach which has been immortalized by the song "Gherua..." in the Bollywood movie, Dilwale. But beware, high tides hit this beach often, so you may not be allowed into the water. Enjoy a walk on the beach and immerse in the beautiful surrounding cliffs around.

Wish I could know more about the crash landed plane and what happened then? Interested? Shall I tell you more....?

It was the year 1973 and a United States DC Plane was flying in the Sky. Everything was perfect, the whether was ok and all the engines were working fine. Why then did the plane crash? Silly it may sound, but yes, the plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Solheimasandur, in the South Coast of Iceland. But there were no causalities and all the passengers were safe. Later it turned out that the pilot had simply switched over to the wrong fuel tank.

En route to Vik Village as you proceed from Reykjavik, there are two waterfalls, which you should not give it a miss. And if you plan your trip during the month of October, you can see the Northern lights, but ensure that are no clouds and no lights from the point you wish to see the Northern lights.
