When you can see more gliders than birds in the sky, you know there is something special about this place. Bir, also known as the 'Paragliding destination of India' is located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, easily accessible via roads. This place has a charm of its own - fresh air, lush green mountains, small cafes serving delicious food and 100's of gliders flying in the sky.

From the eyes of an explorer -

Paragliding Landing Site!

I am someone who generally likes planning and researching almost everything before heading out to a new place. But this time, it was a little different for me. It was all about being there and exploring things one at a time.

Bir has something for everyone. If you are a foodie - it has soul satisfying food, if you are an adventure lover - it has Asia's best Paragliding, even if you are someone looking for a peaceful getaway away from the hustle of cities, Bir has got you covered.

Things to do in Bir -

Trek to Hot Water Spring 🤓

1) Dip in Tatwani Hot Water Spring: Natural hot springs when the outside temperature is sub zero is a blessing. But here is the catch, taxi drops you about 5 kms away from the site from where trekking is the only option. Cab takes about 2 hours to reach the starting point.

Few points to note-

> The 5 km trek is moderately difficult and takes about 1.5-2 hrs to complete.

> There is no demarcated route so it's better to hire a guide. They usually charge 400-500/-

> Cabs may charge anywhere between 2000-3000/- total to-and-fro (subject to your bargaining ability :P)

> The roads are not in very good condition, at least at the time of writing this, so be prepared.

2) Paragliding: Probably the reason why you are in Bir in the first place. Jump from 9000 ft is an experience unmatched. You forget everything else for those 15-20 minutes and live every second to its fullest.

Billing is the launch site for paragliding located at a distance of 14 kms from Bir. There are several small companies/ merchants through which you can book your flight. They usually charge between 1700-2000 which includes drop from Bir to Billing, flight and the go-pro video. (I suggest you to book on the spot i.e Bir itself as rates are generally higher online)

If this still does not satisfy the adventure bug in you, Bir also offers 15-20 days training in Paragliding after which you can ride solo. It costs something around 20k.

3) Biking: If you have a thing for bikes, Bir - Barot bike ride is an absolute delight. Barot valley is situated 50 kms from Bir, and has amazing options for riverside camping with great food. Roads are a bit challenging at some patches but totally worth it. Perfect place for some music and bonfire.

Must visit cafes -

1) Vairagi Cafe: Who does not like momos? Hands down the best place in Bir to have amazing ‘Fried Chicken Momos’. If you have a sweet tooth, do try ’Nutcake Pastry’, its delicious!

2) Moonshine Madness: Another beautiful cafe with great ambience and yummy food. ‘Red Sauce Spaghetti with Meat Balls’ is a must try! This place is a bit expensive, but worth it.

3) Avva's Cafe: If you wish to have South Indian food, this is your place. Decent ambience and rates.

4) Garden Cafe: This place is known for its freshly baked 'Thin Crust Pizzas'. As the name suggests, they have beautiful sitting in the garden.

There are several stay options available. I recommend staying at some hostel to make the best out of your trip. GoStops, Zostel, HipHostel.. there are many. Apart from being pocket friendly, it gives you a chance to meet many like-minded people.

Bir which used to be a lesser known place is slowly becoming crowded, especially during peak seasons and holidays. So do visit the place, before it starts losing its charm :P
