After 24 long years, Shimla finally had a white Christmas!
Yesterday, many hill stations and Himalayan villages across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand received their first snowfall this year. While places like Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti became slightly inaccessible due to the snowfall, hill stations like Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda become all the more popular.
People who were already vacationing in Shimla, had the time of their lives watching the snow fall on Christmas day.
Earlier last week, Shimla and Kufri were experiencing really sunny, warm days. So, the snowfall was a really pleasant surprise.
The minimum temperature dropped all over the Himalayas. The temperature at Keylong was recorded at its lowest this season at -2 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Shimla was recorded at 3.8 degree Celsius until Saturday. The temperature plunged to -1 degree Celsius at night and the daily maximum temperature dropped by four degrees, from 11 degree Celsius to 7 degree Celsius.
An official from Shimla Meteorological Centre said, “The records at the meteorological office suggest that it’s the first time in 24 years that it has snowed on Christmas day."
After experiencing a White Christmas in Shimla, snow lovers started moving higher to Kufri which was a white wonderland yesterday.
Snowfall in Shimla means that the Himalayas will soon be covered in a thick blanket of soft snow. If you are a winter traveller who chases snowfall, then this is the perfect time to pack your bags because these hill stations are accessible, despite the snowfall.
