SEE THE BEAUTY IN RUINS: KANGRA FORT
A MUST VISIT PLACE FOR HISTORY BUFFS.
Situated about 20 km from Dharamshala on the outskirts of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, Kangra Fort is also one of India's oldest dated forts. It is one of the largest forts in the Himalayas and is 8th largest in the world according to India’s Archaeological Survey, it covers approximately 463 acres of land. This fort was built by the Katoch dynasty, the traces of its origins to the ancient Kingdom of Trigarta, this name was given to this because it is between three rivers- Satluj, Beas and Ravi, also mentioned in Mahabharata.
This fort had seen many wars in history, and it got heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1905.
The entrance of this fort is enclosed between the two gates through a small courtyard constructed during the Sikh era.
At the entrance is a small museum displaying the history of Fort Kangra. Fort architecture includes beautiful gateways, temples, courtyards, doors. All of this makes for a great opportunity to recreate history in our minds.
Apart from the history, this fort is famous for its mesmerizing views. Mountain View that comes after the climbing at the top of the fort definitely worth the climb.
Entry Charge: 150 bucks per person (Indians) and 300 bucks per person (Foreigners) including audio guide.
Fort Timing: 9 am - 5:30 pm
You need almost 2-3 hours to explore it properly so plan accordingly.
Fort is just 3 km away from Kangra bus stand.
