Tourists Returning Due to Overcrowding at Hill Stations

North India is in the grip of a heat wave and people are heading to hill stations like Nainital, Mussoorie, Shimla and Manali to get some respite from the scorching heat. The influx of tourists has led to overcrowding, lack of parking spaces, traffic congestion and unavailability of accommodation.

The scene is no different in less popular places like Kanatal, Manikaran and Kasol.

With an increasing number of tourists flocking the hills the Nainital administration has announced that tourists will be barred from entering the hill station when parking is full and will only be allowed once there is some space.

Tourists, too, complained of overcrowding and admitted that it still feels like they are amid the city crowd. Some of them even said that they were planning to return the same they arrive.

Notably, over-tourism is one of the major concerns in the past few years in many hill stations, with an increase in waste, water consumption, and air pollution. Let’s also not forget that the queen of hills, Shimla, faced acute water crisis around the same time last year and hotels and administration urged tourists to not visit the town.

About 4,500 tourists’ vehicles enter Manali and 5,000 vehicles enter Shimla every day. Weekends witness more rush resulting in clogged traffic conditions.
