If you're looking for a quiet escape, far from the noise and rush of daily life, but also far from over-crowded tourists hotspots, I have a secret that will make you very happy. Hidden between the tourist hubs of Kullu and Manali, I discovered a quaint town that is remarkably beautiful. This stunning Himalayan hamlet is all about hidden trails, sprawling hills and gushing rivers. The sleepy town of Naggar makes for a truly offbeat and serene getaway.
About Naggar
The town is situated on the banks of the mighty Beas River, in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. Back when Kullu was a kingdom, Naggar was its capital, and the 500-year-old Naggar Castle is a grand remnant of that bygone era. In 1978, the Castle was taken over by the state tourism board to run as a heritage hotel. Till date, it remains the most popular tourist attraction of the town.
How To Reach Naggar
Since there are no direct buses to Naggar, it makes sense to go by road. The route to Naggar is fairly underutilized and is, therefore, uneven and bumpy in parts. That's why it is advisable to take a motorcycle to Naggar, rather than a car. The ride from Delhi spans nearly 600 kms and can take upto 15 hours. A Royal Enfield is a sturdy and safe companion for the journey where the roads aren't the smoothest. The thrill of the ride, combined with the scenic panoramas on loop, make it a journey to remember!
Best Time To Visit Naggar
Naggar is great to visit around the year. During the summer, the weather remains mild, with a slight chill settling in at night. During the monsoon, Naggar becomes foggy, but that's quite a gorgeous sight. In the winter, a blanket of snow covers the town, making it look straight out of a fairytale.
Things To Do In Naggar
Despite being a sleepy town, there's actually lots to see and do in Naggar.

Built in 1460 AD, the Naggar Castle is an architectural delight. This wood and stone mansion is a blend of Himachali and English construction. The blockbuster song 'Yeh Ishq Haye' from Jab We Met was also filmed here.

The Gauri Shankar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a short walk from the Naggar Castle. Built in the eleventh century, it is considered the last structure of the Gurjara-Pratihara traditions. The stone carving work is quite beautiful.

Russian painter, writer and philosopher Nicholas Roerich was so awed by the beauty of Naggar that he decided to settle here forever. In his memory, the International Roerich Memorial Trust has been established and showcases some of his prized possessions. The Trust is mighty popular with foreign tourists and you ought to check it out too. It's a mere 15-minute motorcycle ride from the Naggar Castle.

Located 13 kms from Naggar, Jana village and waterfall make for a great day-long adventure. This easy trek is perfect for beginners.
