If you're looking for an affordable adventure in the Himalayas, a trip to McLeodGanj and the Triund and Laka Glacier trek might be just what you need. McLeodGanj is a charming hill station in Himachal Pradesh, located just a few hours away from Delhi by bus. It's famous for its Tibetan culture, Buddhist monasteries, and breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar range.
"Plan Your McLeod Ganj Trip According to Your Travel Style: Trekker's Paradise or Family Friendly Fun!"
Here's a suggested itinerary for a four-day trip to McLeodGanj and the Triund/Laka Glacier trek, which is suitable for young couples, families, and solo travelers alike:
Day 1 - Get ready to explore the quaint town of McLeodGanj!
After reaching Dharamshala via bus from Kashmere Gate, take a cab to reach the charming town of McLeodGanj. The journey from Dharamshala to McLeodGanj is a scenic one, so make sure to keep your eyes glued to the window. You can find budget homestays near Dolma Chowk, one which I prefer is Sonu Homestay, located just a few meters away from Backpackers Hostel. It offers double occupancy rooms with balconies that will take your breath away. Perfect for couples, families, and solo travelers, it costs just around INR 800 per night (as of 2022).
Once you settle in, visit the famous Namgyal Monastery, where you can witness the serene Buddhist monks practicing their daily rituals. Stroll through the colorful markets filled with handicrafts, clothing, and souvenirs. Satisfy your taste buds with some local delicacies like momos, thukpa, and tibetan bread.
Day 2 - Trekking to Triund/Laka Glacier and Camping Under the Stars
Start your day early and head to Bhagsunag or Gallu Mata Temple, the two starting points of the Triund trek. We recommend Gallu Mata as it is less steep and offers a gentle trek through nature. From Dolma Chowk, it is just 2.5 km (can be covered in 40 minutes) to reach Gallu Mata. After that, it's around 6-7 km to reach Triund, which will take you approximately 2.5-3 hours.
If you're a beginner, we suggest camping at Triund for a night and soaking in the mountain views. You can rent a tent for two people for around INR 1000 or carry your own. Manu Bhai Dhaba at Triund serves delicious food, and you can also enjoy a bonfire and stargazing. It's an experience that will stay with you forever.
Alternatively, you can trek further to Laka Glacier Trek(around 3.5km from triund top), which is the perfect place to camp your tent for the night. The Snowline Cafe just before Laka Glacier is an excellent spot for food and a break. The snow peaks and stars will give you a sense of calm and peace that you may have never experienced before.
Day 3: Descend from Triund and Explore McLeod Ganj
As the sun rises over the mountains, it's time to pack up your tent and bid farewell to the scenic Triund. Begin your descent towards McLeod Ganj with the same enthusiasm and energy that you had when you began the trek. The downhill walk is relatively easy, and you can take your time to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar ranges and the lush green valleys below.
In the evening, relax and unwind in the serene ambiance of your homestay. You can indulge in some stargazing or have a cozy bonfire with your friends or family. With the memories of the trek and the beauty of the mountains etched in your heart, it's time to get a good night's sleep before heading back home the next day.
Day 4: Ropeway, Tea Gardens, and Dharamshala Stadium
On the final day of your trip, wake up early to catch the ropeway from McLeod Ganj to Dharamshala. The breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys from the ropeway are simply mesmerizing. Make sure to keep your camera ready to capture some stunning shots.
After reaching Dharamshala, head to the famous tea gardens and enjoy a peaceful walk amidst the lush greenery. Take in the aroma of fresh tea leaves and witness the tea-making process. If you're lucky, you might even get to taste some of the best tea in India.
Next, visit the beautiful St. John in the Wilderness Church, which is one of the oldest churches in the region. The church has a serene ambiance and stunning architecture, making it a must-visit for history and architecture buffs.
Finally, visit the famous Dharamshala Stadium, which is the highest stadium in India. The stadium is located at an altitude of 1457 meters and offers stunning views of the mountains and valleys. Take a walk around the stadium and soak in the lively atmosphere.
In the evening, head back to the local market for some last-minute shopping and enjoy a delicious lunch. As the day comes to an end, it's time to head back to the bus stand for your journey back to Delhi. With a heavy heart and a soul full of beautiful memories, bid goodbye to the beautiful mountains of Himachal Pradesh, hoping to return soon for another adventure.
