Kashmir, often referred to as "Paradise on Earth," is a region of unparalleled natural beauty in northern India. While its snow-capped mountains and lush valleys are famous worldwide, its rivers remain a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
As someone who has lived all her life in the valley, I'm thrilled to take you along the heart of Kashmir's river tourism, as we explore the five most beautiful rivers: Jhelum, Lidder, Vishav, Kishanganga, and Bringi.
Jhelum River:
Our adventure begins with the Jhelum River, the lifeline of the Kashmir Valley. Flowing gracefully through the capital city of Srinagar, this ancient river offers captivating views of historic bridges, traditional wooden houseboats, and vibrant markets lining its banks.
Take a Shikara ride on Dal Lake, a tributary of the Jhelum, and soak in the enchanting beauty of the region. The Jhelum River's serene waters and picturesque surroundings make it a must-visit destination for river enthusiasts.
Lidder River:
Head southeast to Pahalgam, and you'll encounter the pristine Lidder River. Nestled amidst lush meadows and pine forests, the Lidder is known for its crystal-clear waters and excellent trout fishing.
Adventurous souls can try their hand at white-water rafting, while nature lovers can explore the breathtaking Aru Valley and Betaab Valley nearby. Whether you're seeking adventure or tranquillity, the Lidder River has it all.

Vishav River:
Winding its way through the picturesque Kulgam district, this river finds itself ensconced amid towering peaks and unspoiled alpine landscapes. Notably, it is home to the magnificent Aharbal Falls, often referred to as the "Niagara Falls of Kashmir" due to its impressive volume.
Moreover, adventurous souls can embark on a trek to Kongwattan, tracing their way along the riverbanks, crossing its charming wooden bridges, and wandering along its pristine course. In essence, the Vishav River offers a promise of solitude and unparalleled natural beauty that is bound to leave you absolutely captivated.
Kishanganga River:
The next one is the breathtaking Kishanganga River, known as the Neelum River in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The river flows through the stunning Gurez and Keran valleys, offering jaw-dropping views of glaciers, meadows, and terraced fields. The Kishanganga is perfect for trout fishing and trekking along its banks. It's also the site of the famous Kishanganga Dam project, making it a unique blend of natural beauty and modern engineering.
Bringi River:
Located near the town of Daksum, Anantnag ,the Bringi River is a tranquil paradise. Take a leisurely walk along the river's edge, visit nearby places and savor the simple pleasures of life amidst nature.
I consider myself blessed to be born in Kashmir and to have had the privilege of growing up amidst the astounding beauty that this land is graced with. From the very outset, I've been deeply acquainted with the exceptional charm of Kashmir's rivers, each of which presents an extraordinary opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural splendor and rich culture of this region.
