My journey to Toshmaidan can only be described as an enriching experience for the soul. The untouched beauty of the meadows, the serene surroundings, and the warm hospitality of the locals all came together to create an unforgettable visit.
Where is this hidden gem?
Situated approximately 45 kilometers away from the main city of Srinagar, in the Budgam district of Kashmir, this place boasts a rich ancient history. It is said that Toshmaidan was not only frequented by local shepherds but also by those from neighboring countries. During medieval times, the Mughal rulers utilized this vast meadow as a route to reach Poonch through the Poonch Gali.
The name "Toshmaidan" is derived from "Tu Shah Maidan," which translates to "King of Meadows" in literary terms. Perhaps, this grand title was bestowed by the Mughals, who made Toshmaidan their first stopover in the valley when they entered Kashmir via Loran (Poonch).
How to reach?
The closest airport to Toshmaidan is Srinagar Airport, situated 70 kilometers away. The nearest railway station can be found in Budgam. To reach Toshmaidan, one can hire a private taxi either from Srinagar or Budgam, and the journey can be completed within 3 hours through Budgam. Along the way, travelers must pass through Basmai Gali, a pass located at an altitude of 13,000 feet, to reach their destination.
As you traverse through the villages of Drang, Zakhora, and others, the air becomes cooler and crisper, and the landscape transforms into a vibrant array of Alpine flowers. The mesmerizing beauty of the surroundings compels travelers to pause frequently and capture the pristine allure of this unspoiled region.
Finally, upon arrival, the expansive meadows stretch out before you, a pure and untouched greenery that seems almost surreal, like stepping into a dream.
What is the best time to visit Toshmaidan?
The ideal time to visit Toshmaidan is from May to September, as during the other months, the place is covered in a thick blanket of snow, making it inaccessible.
In the summer season, these meadows come alive with a vibrant display of various wildflower species. The enchanting sight of butterflies dancing around further enhances the beauty of these landscapes, adding a delightful touch of color to the surroundings.
Where to stay?
Due to its remote and inaccessible location for most of the year, there are no hotel accommodations available in Toshmaidan. However, during the summer season, people often camp in their own tents, making it a popular camping spot. The meadows are filled with shepherds and their sheep during this time, which adds to the safety and charm of camping in this picturesque place.
After experiencing the heavenly beauty of Toshmaidan, visitors can easily return to Srinagar in the evening.
