Gujarat, a land steeped in rich history, culture, and vibrant traditions, beckoned me for my inaugural visit with my family. I eagerly anticipated savoring Gujarati snacks and cuisine. Gujarat is renowned for its Navratri celebrations, delectable food, the historic Dandi March led by Gandhi Ji, the colorful Chaniya-Choli attire, and much more. Yet, of all these attractions, what left the most lasting impression was the warmth of its people and the sea!

Our pilgrimage had a threefold purpose: to seek blessings at two Jyotirlingas, Somnath and Nageshwar, and to explore the holy city of Dwarka, Lord Krishna’s abode.

Part 1: Here's 1 Day itinerary for Somnath

Somnath Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the Prabhas Patan near Veraval in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, India. The temple complex has a rich history, having been constructed and reconstructed 17 times due to various historical events, including invasions and demolitions. It is commonly held that the original Somnath Temple was founded by Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which further enhances the sacred nature of this location.

Day 0: My journey commenced in Mumbai. Boarded the 19217 train from Bandra Terminus, departing at 1:30 PM, and arrived in Veraval the following day at 6:30 AM. Veraval, a quaint town merely 7 KM from Somnath, offered convenient access through readily available auto-rickshaws.

Day 1: Arrived in Veraval at sunrise and proceeded to the hotel in Somnath. The 7-kilometer route was adorned with a magnificent sight - hundreds of boats, both small and large, lined the road. This area also serves as a hub for fisheries, hosting approximately 300 companies.

‣ At 10:30 AM, left the hotel and hopped into an auto-rickshaw to Somnath Temple. Began our day with breakfast, choosing from numerous small eateries, although fancy restaurants were scarce.

‣ The temple premises provided a free locker service for devotees to securely store their belongings. Mobile phones, electronic gadgets, leather items, bags, and purses are not permitted inside.

‣ We had our Darshan at Somnath Temple. Since it was the off-season and noon-time, we completed our Darshan in just 15-20 minutes. Afterward, explored the temple premises, marveling at the panoramic view of the ocean. Aarti is performed 3 times a-day, 7 AM, 12 PM & 7 PM.

‣ Our visit extended to the historic Somnath Old Temple by Devi Ahilya, 150m from Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple. It's considered a must-visit before the main temple. This temple offers close Darshans, and devotees can make offerings to Lord Shiva's idol.

‣ Following the temple visits, we indulged in a leisurely lunch and a refreshing afternoon nap.

5 PM, Hello Evening! Hired rickshaw for the entire evening to explore all the prominent attractions/temples of the town.

‣ Laxminarayan Temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. It's conveniently located near the beach, just a 50-meter walk away.

‣ Bhalka Tirth Temple: Located 4 kilometers from Somnath Temple, we arrived just in time for the Aarti. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and marks the spot where he was struck by a hunter's arrow, taking his last breath.

‣ Gita Mandir: A temple devoted to Lord Krishna, it features 18 verses from the holy Bhagwat Gita inscribed on the marble pillars of the temple.

‣ Triveni Sangam: This is a sacred Ghat where three rivers converge: Hiran, Kapila, and Saraswati (though Saraswati remains hidden).

‣ Ram Mandir: A newly constructed temple featuring idols of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, and Lord Laxman.

‣ Cycling Track: It is built beside the temple premises with a sea view. One can rent bicycles and enjoy the scenic Arabian Sea view during sunrise or a marvelous evening.

‣ Light & Sound Show: This event takes place inside the temple premises between 8 PM and 9 PM (closed during the monsoon/rainy season).
