The rann of kutch is a vast desert in the state of Gujarat, the region is a seasonal salt marsh and under water during other times. This area being dry and arid is devoid of any vegetation but is fertile with diverse culture and heritage. In 2005 the Gujarat government started the Rann Utsav, what began as a 3-day event evolved into a 100-day festival beginning end of October to February every year. Dhordo, a tiny hamlet in the Kutch region, around 80 kms from Bhuj city, is converted into a tent city with a different theme every year. In spite of staying in Gujarat, I finally had the chance to visit this mega event this year. I booked a 2N/3D package during full moon for a special experience through the Gujarat tourism website.
We arrived at the Bhuj railway station after an overnight train journey and reported to the reception area of the tent city outside the station. The reception tent is erected by the organisers in the parking area of the Bhuj railway station and has facility for freshening up and refreshments to the guests till the time they board the buses to the tent city at Dhordo which is 1-and-a-half-hour road trip. I must say the arrangements from the time of pick up to the time till drop off are commendable and worth the money spent.
We reached the tent city crossing many small villages through the arid region of Kutch. The grand entrance and the reception lounge at the tent city make you feel as if you are standing in a 5-star hotel. After check in formalities you will be escorted to your respective tents. The entire area has been divided in to cluster of tents and there are 2 dining halls so you can access the one near you. The food is superb with a delicious feast awaiting you at every meal. Golf carts and bicycles have been provided inside for travelling if you do not wish to walk. There is a main ground for all the cultural events taking place at night and the entire tent city has been divided into different activities like indoor games, history of the Rann Utsav, art gallery, pottery section and a shopping area. Depending on the package you have selected, you will be escorted to the White ran to view surnrise/sunset/fullmoon. There is a place called Kala Dungar which has a Datta mandir and a sunset viewing point. You will also visit a handicraft village called Bhujodi where the local artisans work and display their handicrafts.
Sunset and sunrise appear magical in the white desert and at night full moon illuminates the entire area like a beautiful dream. You can enjoy camel cart/camel rides in the desert. In the tent city, many photographic opportunities have been created where you can capture memories lasting a lifetime!
Overall, this was a unique experience which we enjoyed a lot and if possible, everyone should visit it once in their lifetime.
As Amitabh Bachchan has rightly said “ kuch din to guzariye Gujarat mein”
