Adalaj Stepwell or Adalaj ni Vav.
The Stepwell is located in the village Adalaj in Gandhinagar district, Gujarat
In Gujarati, the Stepwell is called as Vav.
It was built in 1498. The construction was started by Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty of Dandai Desh. But he was killed in a war, later the King Mahmud Begada built it in Indo-Islamic architecture style in 1499.
The Kingdom of Rana Veer Singh was very small. It was subject to store water and was highly dependent on the rains. So Rana Veer Singh began the construction of a large n deep Stepwell.
Adalaj ni vav has three distinctive features: the entrance pavilion at the ground level, the flight of steps leading to the circular tank, and the well at the lowest level which connects to an underground aquifer. The five-storied sandstone structure is laid out along a north-south axis and is octagonal at the top, it is built on a large number of intricately carved pillars.
