Everyone has their own travel stories; each one is unique and has a distant experience in it. This is why every travel story is worth to listen to. I have one such travel story. This happened the night we reached this blissful place named Gokarna.

Not many hostels came up when I was looking for hostels in Gokarna. Maybe the other ones weren’t as popular as Trippr was. The other reason for its fame and that was its location- The Middle Beach.

The Location

Yes, the hostel was right there on the beach of this blissful place named Gokarna. You wake up to the waves and the first thing to see stepping out of the dorm room is the beach. A beach where there was hardly any sign of humans. Have your meals by the bay, have dinner and drinks with the sound of waves in the background.

So we reached this blissful place named Gokarna, it was late at night after travelling for over 7 hours and changing 4-5 buses and experience the most thrilling auto rides. That day we only had our breakfast and were starving for the rest of the time. 2 bananas and a glass of lime juice were what we managed to have at some bus stop. That day we were everything from tired to sleep and dehydrated to hungry, oh yes and terrified too. All we wanted to do was find a bed and doze off!

We called off the day after having small portions of fried rice, as it was a bad idea sleeping with an empty stomach. We were climbing up the stairs to our dorm, which had a small balcony with it. Just before I and my friend were entering the room, I noticed something about the waves. It looked like the waves were glowing! Now, this was uncanny I know, but the glowing seemed very obvious to me and not able to contain the excitement I called Pooja to take a look at it. I asked to wait and check the next batch of waves, and this time nothing happened! She wasn’t really convinced by my reactions and accused me of being sleep deprived and asked to sleep.

I had no explanations to give. We went to bed.

That Night

Then the next day, last night in this blissful place named Gokarna, it was only me and Pooja were in the cafe and discussing the next morning’s agenda. We wanted to gather some information about the spot from where we had to board our bus back home. I called Mahesh the hostel manager, who was probably on his way to the beach for some help with the transport. But before I could ask him anything, he cut me mid-sentence and asked us to walk with him.

I remember him saying “I will help you with everything later now you guys come with me”. This was strange, why was he asking us to join him? We still made our move and walked to the beach, near the waves.

“Look at the waves carefully!” Mahesh said. “They Glow Sometimes”.

I and Pooja were left awestruck! We did not imagine that what I saw last was actually true. The waves in this blissful place called Gokarna actually glow! We spent the last 20 minutes of our last night experiencing one of the most breathtaking magic of nature. Fortunately, we were unable to click pictures, that's how we experienced that moment in real time.

Later Mahesh educated us on why the waves were glowing. So the credit of the glowing waves goes to the small luminous plants called Planktons, these plankton glow when they sense danger. These tiny plants often found on every beach. However, thanks to the flashy neon and laser lights we don’t often experience these magical creatures on every beach. Especially on beaches like Goa.

Planktons can be seen well on Paradise Beach, where this is absolutely no sign of light. People come here to lead the “SATVIK LIFE”.
