The Christmas Oratorio

Bach Oratorio has long been a festive Christmastime classic among concert audiences and church congregations, delighting concert audiences and church congregations alike with its festive choral work. A testament to how composers can innovating within their genre, this work serves as an exceptional example. Whereas other pieces such as Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme or Jules Massenet's Werther use music for dramatic purposes only, Christmas Oratorio functions as its own narrative musical form.

Bach originally composed this Oratorio in 1734 for Leipzig's St Thomas Church during Christmastime; it consists of six cantatas that Bach expertly tailored to tell the story of Christ's birth. Drums and bright flutes announce the arrival of wise men while shepherds are informed through devotional pastoral music; finally in Part 6 there is pure joyful celebration as Jesus is worshiped with simple joy!
