Europe's highest ski resort (at a lofty 2300m), Val Thorens is the leading resort in The Three Valleys ski area ̶ it's a snow-sure base form where you can explore 600km of gorgeous groomed pistes. With a large network of red and blue runs, it's ideal for intermediate skiers and snowboarders, plus celebrated apres-ski venues like Le Malaysia club are perfect for letting your hair down.

Another terrific Three Valleys ski resort, Méribel is full of charming traditional chalets and pristine skiing for enthusiasts of all abilities. There are ample green and blue runs around the Altiport area for novices and intermediates, the Combe De Vallon run down from the pinnacle of Mont Vallon is a terrific steep red, and La Face is a famous black run that featured in the 1992 Winter Olympics.

Courchevel is a cracking ski resort which boasts over 150km of skiable terrain for skiers of all stripes covering altitudes stretching from 1224m to 3248m and peppered by four fantastic accommodation villages at ascending altitudes. Part of the famous L'Espace Killy ski area, Tignes is another high altitude Tarentaise Valley ski resort which comprises five villages, all of which have their own unique ambience. What's uniformly fantastic however, is the skiing ̶ there are 300km of pistes here and fab fresh powder on the slopes of the Grande Motte Glacier. If you're an advanced skier fond of thrilling vertical drops, try runs like The Fingers and Mickey's Ears! Meanwhile, ski school ESF in Tignes Le Lac teaches kids as young as 3 as well as adult novices.
