Beside crystal clear sea and pretty places along the Dubrovnik coast, this area also offers a very interesting inland part called Konavle with fruitful valleys in the middle and high mountains on the other side. This excursion is offered to provide visitors the opportunity to dive into the green area of Konavle that is hiding a turbulent but magnificent history that can still be felt at some places.
Through the centuries-old history of the area, from Celtic and Illyrian times to the present day, there were many different rulers, but they have not changed the basic characteristics of Konavle man, his personality and self-awareness, his loyalty to the country and his homeland. The first stop, after picking you up from your hotels, will be under a fort that was built on a cliff 25 meters high from the Illyrians and Romans. It is called 'Sokol Kula' which means Falcon Fort. This is because from here you have a view far out over the Konavle area, almost like a falcon has. Built as a protection fortification and renovated during the last years, today you have the possibility to enter this fort, visit the old store- and guard houses inside of it. For sure, beside the great panoramic views, you will also feel the spirit of this ancient place while listening and learning about its history and purpose.
The second stop is also about the history and lifetime of Konavle but closer to the valleys and the river Ljuta that still flows through the fields. Just close to the river, you will get the opportunity to visit a system of water-and stamp mills built about 400 years ago, listen about its history and also see a demonstration of the same as they still work like hundred years ago. After so much history and before we make a short walk through Cavtat, refreshments will be organized for you. Enjoy the taste of homemade ham, cheese and of course some local wines and liqueurs.
Cavtat is the last stop on this trip. It will inspire you with its lovely promenade, its scenery, and rich cultural and historical heritage.
Note: Pick up from your hotel or other accommodation in Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Plat, Mlini, Zaton, Orasac and Slano. On request, we organize also pick up from the islands Lopud, Kolocep and Sipan (extra charge for the boat transfer).
Sokol tower - found itself under Dubrovnik rule in 1420 and was immediately submitted to further construction – rebuilding of certain parts, strengthening of others, arming and general maintenance. This fort survived the big earthquake of 1667 unscathed . It is not mentioned in the 1672 archives as a military complex and it was probably abandoned around that time. As was customary in the region, the locals used the stones of the fort to build their homes and smaller walls, so Fort Sokol was heavily deconstructed. The ruins of the fort have been placed under state protection and are maintained in their present condition.
River Ljuta in Konavle, and its upper stream, containing the mill circuit, is protected by a natural landscape, while the system mills a protected monument. This is a very nice place that your visitors do not leave you indifferent.
Places like Cavtat offer so much to visitors. Its scenery, the rich cultural and historical heritage along with the range of services offered to tourists meet the demands of the present day tourists, thus making it one of the most attractive destinations on the Adriatic coast. Cavtat is located between the magic city of Dubrovnik on one side and beautiful Konavle on the other.
