We were staying in an area called Emirates Living, part of the new development in Dubai and today we were off to see the Old Dubai.
Dubai was divided into two main areas by the Dubai Creek – Deira & Bur Dubai. Bur Dubai is located on the western side of the Creek, while Deira – the commercial center is on the opposite side.
Deira is home to the famous gold souq and the aromatic spice souq. These are earmarked on every itinerary to experience the old world charm of Dubai.
You can shop for saffron, spices, souvenirs, scarfs, gold etc and while the shop-keepers call out to you to look at their colourful wares, most tourists are happy to just soak in the experience and walk away. Nevertheless a noisy and colourful place; we bought saffron, souvenirs and sand art in glass bottles.
This Old Dubai is losing importance due to the development along the Sheikh Zayed Road and the areas towards Abu Dhabi. All the prior places such as – Palm Jumeirah, JBR, Dubai Marina, Ibn Battuta Mall, Mall of the Emirates etc are part of this new development or new Dubai.
Happy travelling,
Anju
