A tiny tropical island off the coast of Gujarat, marooned by cerulean waters, golden sand, and balmy breeze - Diu ticks all the boxes and more!
And still, to appease that tropical wanderlust, people often throng to places like Goa or Pondicherry, where in every crevice and corner of the union territory, you can get cheap beer to drown all your woes with. However, I ponder, why Diu never springs up in your mind spontaneously when you envisage a soothing tropical escape away from the frenzied clamor of the modern metropolis?
Many of you’d retort that it’s not the case: Diu has been on the agenda of many Gujaratis for eons now. Moreover, they have a good reason to do so. Our Gujju mota bhais venture there to slake their thirst and transform their dry days back at home to something more alluring with a dash of alcohol here in Diu. But today, I’ll divulge what an astounding place Diu is and why it deserves to be on your bucket list.
So, check out this guide to Diu that takes you beyond its blissful beaches and bountiful booze!
1. Fort of Diu
The Fort of Diu is a sight to behold, a must-see for any traveller. From its walls, one can gaze at the vast sea, and imagine the ships that sailed to and from the old ports of Cambay, Broach and Surat. A lighthouse beckons the adventurous to climb to the island's peak, where a breathtaking panorama awaits. The fort is also a museum of history, with cannonballs and cannons scattered everywhere, telling stories of battles and glory.
The fort was once named after one of the seven wonders of Portugal, along with the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa. This honour made the fort famous around the world, and a symbol of the Portuguese heritage in India.
2. St Paul's Church
St. Paul's Church, the only active church in the area, famous for its beautiful Jesuit style, crafted by Indian artisans, with elaborate wood carvings, a grand facade, and curious curves and shells.
The church honours the Lady of Immaculate Conception, and was built in 1601 AD. It resembles the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, another masterpiece of the Portuguese era. The church is a serene place, where one can sit in silence and admire the divine beauty of the lights and the art.
3. St Thomas Church
Built in the year 1598, a museum now stands where the ancient St Thomas Church once did, to reach its Gothic gates, you must climb a sloping stretch of stone steps that beckon you to rest on their soft surface. But do not linger too long, for inside awaits a treasure of wood-carved holy figures, each one different in size and grace.
4. Naida Caves
Discover the hidden wonders of Naida Caves, where the Portuguese carved out a labyrinth of tunnels and steps from a massive rock for their construction needs. Just a short walk from the center of Diu town, these caves are a historical treasure filled with old-world charm and stories of the colonial era. Don’t miss the chance to witness the magical play of sunlight through the cracks in the morning - a must-see attraction for history buffs & photography enthusiasts!
5. Panikota Fort
A remnant of the Portuguese era, the Panikota Fort dates back to the 16th century. It was once a prison in Diu, but now it is a heritage site in the middle of the sea. Also called Fortim-do-Mar, this fort offers a stunning view of the ocean and the clear sky. One can reach this place by a motorboat or a canoe. The fort faces the Diu Fort, and its white walls make it look like an island. There is also a chapel and a lighthouse near the fort.
6. Zampa Gateway
On the Northern boundary of Diu, a striking red wall stands out as a landmark, popularly known as the Zampa Gateway. The wall is embellished with intricate carvings of angels, lions, and a priest, reflecting the influence of different cultures. A man-made waterfall flows down from the wall, creating a soothing sound and a refreshing sight. The Zampa Gateway is more than just a beautiful structure; it is a testimony to the glorious past of Diu.
7. Diu Museum
The Diu Museum, a treasure trove of historical and artistic artifacts, nestled inside the St. Thomas Church, stands still as a relic of the past. Built in 1598, the church now showcases the legacy of the Portuguese through the paintings and sculptures, though worn by time, still impressive. A lovely walk through a garden of fountains leads to the museum’s door, where visitors can marvel at the beauty of the ancient relics.
And when the sun sets, the museum glows with a rainbow of lights, creating a dazzling sight that delights the eyes and welcomes the night.
8. INS Khukri Memorial
The INS Khukri Memorial is a tribute to an Indian Naval Ship that went down during the Indo-Pak War of 1971. The ship was hit by three torpedoes from the Pakistan submarine PNS Hangor on 9 December 1971 and sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu. There were 18 officers and 176 sailors on board at the time of sinking. A memorial was erected in Diu, to honor the courageous martyrs, featuring a scaled model of INS Khukri inside a glass case.
9. Sunset Point
A gentle slope by the Chakratirth Beach, a sacred site for Hindus, invites you to witness the sun’s farewell as it dips into the Arabian Sea; and paints the evening sky with its enchanting mirth like a spell. However, another place to relish the crimson sunset is the Khodiyar Beach, which is a hidden gem among the many beaches of Diu. Surrounded by dense bushes and temples, this beach offers a peaceful and serene view of the waves crashing against the boulders.
10. Sea Shell Museum
The Sea Shell Museum is a unique treasure chest, filled with the wonders of the ocean. It lies 6km from Diu, on the road to Nagoa. The museum showcases the collection of Captain Devjibhai Vira Fulbaria, a sailor who sailed across the world and gathered shells of all shapes, sizes, and colors. He wanted to showcase the diversity and beauty of seashells.
At the Sea Shell Museum, you can use a magnifying glass to admire the details of the shells. You can also read books that tell you the stories of the shells. This is one of the few shell museums in the world and draws visitors from near and far.
