Dubai -Istanbul-Copenhagen
Boarded our flight from sharjah to Copenhagen via Istanbul. Round trip ticket: US $580.
Copenhagen is a beautiful scandic city, the capital of Denmark and has a rich history with the neighboring Scandinavian countries of Norway and Sweden.
Our trip was a very short one where we spent only 4 nights in Copenhagen. It was also a spontaneous trip on a shoestring budget.
We went during the Eid holidays in Dubai in the month of June and figured that the most expensive thing for our trip is going to be our tickets (which more often than not is the case). It costed almost $600 for a round trip ticket on Pegasus airlines via Istanbul. I have to say it was a very decent airline for a low cost carrier. NO FRILLS but good if its just about getting from point A to point B.
Our accommodation was at an Airbnb which was slightly pricey but was right in the city center so its OK that it was slightly pricey as it allowed us to save up big time on transportation costs in the city. Most of the sightseeing were done on foot!!
Lets get to what we did on our break.....
Once we landed into Copenhagen, we took the Train to the Centrum station which was a 200 mtrs walk away from our accommodation. Met our host at the Airbnb, who showed us our room, the appliances in the kitchen and overall a tour of the house we were staying in. 4 nights costed us US $145 per person. We Checked in and crashed as we were tired.
When we woke up it was pretty cold and we had missed the usual city's dinner time. So we went hunting (looking for food) and realized that most of the restaurants were already closed, the ones that were open looked super expensive (also checked google reviews) so we eventually ended up at a pizza place. The pizza was decent but we could've had a 8 course meal in Dubai for the same cost.
Reality hit us that Food is going to be an expensive affair and a shoestring budgeted trip is going to turnout to buying the shoe!
After a good Nights Sleep, we headed to the city center for breakfast (burger king was a good option) after which where we had a pre-arranged free walking tour of Copenhagen.
You can book these through https://www.neweuropetours.eu/sandemans-tours/copenhagen/free-tour-of-copenhagen/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8des5szK5AIVhs13Ch29mwFgEAAYASAAEgIQa_D_BwE
The walking tour was Brilliant and very very informative. Almost a 3 hour tour including toilet stops and photo ops, this was really really nice. We enjoyed the guides information delivery style and it really was truly enjoyable and fun.
Post the tour, we HAD to have a beer! so headed back to the city center, walked around and found a place for a good lunch and some beers. The local beers are a MUST TRY and they really aren't as expensive as the food turns out to be. Finished off lunch and proceeded for our second walking tour for the day, which was a paid tour but totally worth it. It was booked again through neweuropetours.com (USD $20 per person). This was the Must See Copenhagen tour offered by Sandemans. This tour was also amazing as we were the only two tourists with the guide. So it was pretty much a private tour.
Dinner was at a shwarma shack enroute back to our apartment.
Please note: If you intend to do walking tours in Copenhagen, make sure you're wearing the right kind of Footwear. Learnt it the super hard way!
Woke up at an odd hour because my calves, feet and thighs had given up on me. The pain was excruciating. Reason: Didn't wear the right kind of shoes during my entire day walking the previous day.
The streets of Copenhagen are mostly Cobble-stoned streets and you need to have shoes that are sturdy, give proper ankle support and thick soled. (Eg: Timberland's, CAT,) Mainly Rugged Shoes. I was wearing my Onitsuka Tigers and they definitely aren't the shoes for a cobble stoned street city.
Today we have a Personal City tour with a Photographer. Super fun experience which was booked through the Airbnb Experiences section. Look her up on Instagram: @anastasia_snapshots.
This tour is a Personalized tour where Anastasia talks about the city and the landscapes all while taking some mind-blowing pictures of you. This is a walking tour and yet was a brilliant one. Took us about 2 hours to complete this tour and some of the pictures she took of us are below:
After this tour, my legs were like lead! Thus I needed some thing to divert my attention from this pain. Who comes to the rescue?? BEERS!!! hahhaha. Definitely must try is their local brew called The Royal Beer! Just fantastic!!!!!
We found a cafe where they served breakfast and beers and spent the day chilling at this cafe having beers, interacting with the bartenders, enjoying the movement of pedestrian traffic and just letting our hair down! Today was going to be ONE HELL OF A DAY.
We sat around at the cafe until 1730 from 1100 am!! After which, we headed for our PUB CRAWL that was booked through Sandemans again. (cost: US$ 20 per person). The best part is that once you have the wristband given for the PUB CRAWL, you can join them everyday for the pub crawl for a YEAR!! 365 days of PUB CRAWLS for only US $20!!!!!!!
The pub crawl Actually brought us back to our apartment CRAWLING! I only remember 2 of the 4 pubs that we visited...so imagine my state + legs were still hurting.
Our last day in CPH and we spent this in bed in a hangover. Got out for lunch at a Thai restaurant and came back and slept. Woke up straight in the evening at around 4:30 - 5:00 pm as a friend of my Wife's was visiting us. Had a few drinks with her and headed out for dinner. HANGOVERS ARE BAD!! :(
Time to depart! we woke up pretty early and were fresh today. Headed out for Brunch at a local Bagel Place. This was the most amazing, most tasty and the most reasonable meal that we had had in the past 5 says. Packed up our luggage and carried another bagel sandwich to the airport. Train from the apartment to the airport and we were on our way back. EID was over and so was the weekend. Time to get back to the grind!!!!
