Talakaveri is considered to be the source of the river Kaveri (or Cauvery and so Talacauvery) and a holy place for Hindus. It is located on Brahmagiri hills near Bhagamandala in Coorg district. Talakaveri stands at a height of 1,276 meters above sea level.
A tank or kundike has been erected on a hillside at the place which is said to be the origin of the river. The waters then flow underground to emerge as the Kaveri river at some distance.
The temple here is dedicated to Kaveriamma. Lord Agasthiswara is another diety worshipped here. Although very popular among the tourists and locals alike, it is a favourite place of worship of the Kodavas .
The Brahmagiri hill is besides the temple, and a series of steps lead to the top of the hill. From there one can have a 360 degrees view of the lush green surrounding hills. This area is situated in the dense forests of the western Ghats and gets very heavy annual rainfall. It is among the wettest place perched on the border of the states of Karnataka and Kerala. PIC
Talakaveri makes a beautiful full day outing from Medikeri and when we went in mid February, the wind was still cool and the green cover was mesmerizing. The roads from Medikeri are excellent and it’s a lovely smooth drive through coffee plantations and banana grooves. There is really no need to spend the night here as an up and down trip from Medikeri can be done very comfortably.
Talakaveri is 48 kms from Medikeri by road.
The nearest international airport is in Kannaur, 117 kms.
