Udaipur is a very popular tourist destination. Known for its history, culture, scenic locations and the Rajput era palaces, Udaipur has always attracted both foreign and domestic tourists by the hoards. Our was a full family trip. Since my sister and brother in law were coming down for their holidays, had the trip planned well in advance. A road trip with a hired Innova and driver up and down all the way from Delhi. Also decided for an all night drive so that we could have that extra day at our disposal.Eleven hours with a couple of the special highway tea breaks in between sleeping bouts later, we were greeted by a warm sunny morning at Udaipur. Must complement the roads in Rajasthan. They are a dream come true. Having read a bit about the towns history, was fascinated by the rich heritage of the place. Right from the Imposing City Palace to the subtle and fresh Sahelion ki Bari, Udaipur is a historians delight. We decided for a boat ride on Lake Pichola and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. All the major heritage and luxurious hotels are situated on its banks and the boat tour takes you past most of them. An evening dinner by the lake is a must do here. It makes for a wonderfully surreal experience without which your trip won't be complete, trust me!! We booked the same at Raas Leela by the lake and being my son's 2nd birthday, it was doubly memorable for us. My little champ too was all excited with so much lighting and buzz around. The lake looks majestic at night. With all the palaces and hotels lit up, it makes for a beautiful setting.City Palace is a half day excursion. In the winding lanes by the Lake, it stands out for its grandeur. Its a dream for any history buff and through the entire tour inside we were given a good dose of the history and significance of the place, a wonderful experience indeed. Three hours later, our tired legs were in need of a chair and our parched throats for some chilled beer. We indulged ourselves at the cafe by the main entrance and were delighted to spot the Prince's wife at the helm of it managing the continous and unending flow of people. The palace is run privately by the king and his family from the entry fee and other proceeds that come here and must say that they are doing a wonderful job.Other attractions include the lesser happening Fateh Sagar Lake, Sahelion ki bari, the vintage car museum(you can give it a miss though) and lots of shopping options. Food is another thing that makes Udaipur the place it is. Must try the thali at Natraj Cafe for a uniquely traditional Rajasthani experience. For non veg lovers, try out Ambrai and Raas Leela by Lake Pichola. The Laal Maans is lip smacking. In short a foodies heaven.Couple of days of some serious wandering later was time to say goodbye to this Venice of the East. We left and a small pit stop by Chittorgarh fort, were back in Delhi 10 hours later. A hectic but a refreshing trip with some wonderful memories!!
