What comes to your mind when you hear about trek/trekking? I think of a long journey, starting from the base of a mountain and trekking to the top/summit of it. Or beginning a journey on plains and walking along to reach a particular destination. But trek to Double Decker Root Bridge is nothing like any usual trek.
Why Double Decker Root Bridge Trek is unusual/different/difficult from other treks?
It starts from a point which is high in terms of altitude and your destination is at a point which is low in terms of altitude.
Basically, in the beginning you do downhill and in the end, you do uphill. And this is what makes it a difficult trek as well - because when you have to trek back to where you started, YOU WILL HAVE TO TREK UPHILL!! :'(
Usually you find paved plains or rugged path on a mountain on treks. But for Double Decker Root Bridge trek, there are only and only stairs. That's right! The entire path to reach your destination is made up of well paved stairs consisting of approximately 3500 steps ( each way !!!). So, you can imagine that when you have to return back to the starting point, you will be climbing UP 3500 solid concrete steps; which is no joke!
What actually is Double Decker Root Bridge?
Every trek has a destination. This trek will lead you to the astonishing Double Decker Root Bridge - two natural bridges stacked on top of each other.
In the hearts of village of Cherrapunji, lies this beautiful creation of man and nature.
Yes, these bridges are created by both man and nature - by local khasi people - twisting, tying and reshaping the natural roots of a tree which is commonly known as Indian rubber plant.
Also, it is the most famous tourist attraction spot of Meghalaya.
How to reach Double Decker Root Bridge?
Double Decker Root Bridge is situated in the Indian state of Meghalaya. Read my post How to decide top 4 places to visit in Shillong? to know how to reach Meghalaya.
In Meghalaya, you need to reach a place called Tyrna village (which is in Cherrapunji) - from where your trek will start. You can get a local taxi which can drop you to Tyrna village. From Tyrna village, you will start your trek down the hill on paved staircase to reach Nongriat village - the exact place where Double Decker Root Bridge is.
So basically,
India -> Meghalaya -> Cherrapunji -> Tyrna Village -> Nongriat Village -> Double Decker Root Bridge -> Thank me later 🙂
