What do you think of when you think of Mahabalipuram? Rock-cut temples, seashores and a nice long drive. Given its beauty and the rich heritage this place harbours, Mahabs (as called short by the locals) is undeniably the best hangout spot in the city.
The Most visited tourist destination in India:
Surprisingly, Mahabs has now become the most visited place in India by Foreigners overtaking the Taj Mahal, a common sight in the list for the years one could remember. It is always delightful to know that Chennai people's favourite spot is becoming a favourite to people from all other countries too.
What you didn't know about Mahabs?
One cannot confine Mahabs to its beaches and temples. It goes beyond that. Don't be surprised if I say Mahabs is a lot more fun than you think. There are several exciting activities one can do while in Mahabs. Here are they:
Surfing at the beach:
The UNESCO World Heritage site is also home to surfers in Tamil Nadu. Surfing is a sight that is rarely witnessed in India, that too in Tamil Nadu. But Kovalam beach (Cove along) & Mahabs allow surfing enthusiasts to swell at the beach. The Mumu surf school at Mahabs gives everyone a chance to learn surfing and try out the adventure. If you are someone who loves adventures, this will be your catch.

Paragliding/Paramotoring:
Paramotoring is another exciting activity one might enjoy. A few private organizations have come forward to offer a joy ride above the coast of Mahabalipuram. A simple search on Google will land you on the pages that will get you to fly above the sea. So, while in Mahabs, remember to try it out. I'm sure you will enjoy the landscapes from above.
Chilling at beach resorts:
Mahabs harbours a wide range of luxury beach resorts and the best seafood restaurants to host visitors. Each resort or restaurant has something unique to offer. Check out websites like ThreeBestRated®, Just dial, TripAdvisor, etc., to get suggestions for restaurants in and around Mahabs. Mahabs beach resorts are one of the balmy places to spend your weekend.
Crocodile Bank:
Anyone who visits Mahabs won't miss out on watching a glimpse of the Indo-African alligators and crocodiles at the Crocodile bank. The most amusing event to watch in this place is feeding the crocodiles in the bank. A large crowd gathers to watch this event with awe. It is indeed quite amazing to watch the gigantic reptiles feasting over the raw flesh, a scene we could see only in Natgeo otherwise.
Collect Seashells:
If you are on an early morning walk along the Wide beach at Mahabs, you might be lucky to collect seashells. Strolling over the beach and walking away with seashells can be a delightful experience.
Mahabalipuram is not all about rock-cut temples and caves. It has evolved into a place that can offer you a wholesome experience. You can also go on a boat ride, off-road bike rides and cycling around the town to experience Mahabs in its rawest form all by yourself.
