Nothing is more invigorating than a perfectly planned road trip! The scenic drive from Cape Town to The Cape of Good Hope is about 1 hour 30 minutes but we decided to take our own sweet time & covered this distance of about 70 kilometers in 6 hours! As astounding as it might sound, I suggest you do the same ;)
We had planned a few pitstops in our journey to relax & enjoy the most of what this coast has to offer. With magnificent ocean views, penguins on the beach & lush flora & fauna, it truly makes for one of the best (short) road trips one can ask for!
Muizenberg Beach
After a small drive from Cape Town (30 minutes) we reached our first pitstop, The Muizenberg Beach! Eminent for its white sandy beaches & very brightly colored beach huts, its turquoise waters are surrounded by a towering mountain creating the most splendid scenery. The beach along with its instagrammable setting is also a haven for surfers in the region.
After spending about an hour here & after about at least a hundred social media stories, we moved on to our next destination.
Boulders Beach
Our next pitstop was about 25 minutes away: Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town.
Massive granite boulders on the beach & even in the water is how the name of this beach came into existence. What makes the beach truly rare, are its unusual residents – The African Penguins!
Apart from other fun activities on the beach, you can also go swimming with these beautiful flippers who will enjoy the beach & the waters just as much as you would. An up-close & personal encounter is what makes for a unique and unforgettable experience. It’s so much more than just another day on the beach!
Boulders and its surrounding beaches are a part of the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area, thus ensuring the beaches are safe and clean, and the penguins protected.
Cape of Good Hope
Another 30 minutes’ drive from Boulders Beach & we arrived at our final destination for the day, The Cape of Good Hope.
It's a rocky promontory which is commonly known to be where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, even though the meeting point fluctuates between Cape Agulhas and Cape Point, modern geographers have confirmed it as Cape Agulhas, about 150 kilometers southeast. Nonetheless, the best views of the coastline can be enjoyed from The Cape Point.
It is situated within a section of the Table Mountain National Park, referred to as Cape of Good Hope. Atop the Cape point is an old lighthouse which is the offers stunning views of the coastline.
After a short hike to the peak, we arrived at the Lighthouse. For those who wish to skip the trek can also take a funicular ride to the lighthouse & enjoy the views.
Soon after, we drove down to Cape of Good Hope, rocky shoreline with a white sandy beach, which offers enthralling views of the ocean. One could just spend hours watching the waves crash onto the rocks and revel in the mist & the sun.
Sadly, the park closes at sunset and we had to head back to Cape Town. On our way back, we reminisced about the mesmerizing day we just had along with the dramatic scenery of the clouds, sunset & the seas!
