Kampot is exceptional. Located along its namesake river, it has a much needed easygoing vibe. I stopped here for a few days while backpacking around Cambodia. All good accommodation is along the western bank of the river and often comes with free kayaks and paddleboards. Kampot has a solid backpacker community, bustling in the budget guesthouses with riverfront wooden decks that are perfect for hanging out and meeting other travellers.
There are several bicycle/motorbike routes around Kampot. Folks at Tourist information Center near the bridge will tell you all about them. You can go looking for the elusive 'Secret Beach', ride to the Pepper farms where they grow the famous 'Kampot Pepper' or explore the rural countryside. The river is perfect for kayaking, or you can rent a boat and sail along the mangroves. Or you can just chill out on a hammock by the river and sip fresh fruit juices all day.
I love rivers, I love boats. The food was great, and I ate many of my meals with my toes dipping in the river. Kampot was such a treat.
