Tired of visiting yet another temple, endless sunbathing and sipping cocktails on the beach? Then you might want to add a trip to Koh Chang’s abandoned ‘Ghost ship’ to your to-do list to find out what the hype about this mysterious place is all about!
Koh Chang, known as the island of wild elephants and turquoise waters is known for its relaxed ambiance. However, beyond the clownfish and romantic sunsets, this is still a Thai island where mysticism, ghosts and spirits form a part of the local folklore!
Koh Chang Grand Lagoona Resort also known as the "Ghost Ship Hotel" or "Galaxy Hotel" is an abandoned hotel at Bang Bao Bay, which closed down for renovations a few years ago, but didn’t open again.
It is one of the creepiest and most abandoned places in Thailand. It started as a crazy dream resort on the remote southwestern point of the island in a small secret Laguna with ships being turned to floating hotels serving the guests who are long gone.
The whole resort has a bunch of smaller cabins and such that are also abandoned, but the weirdest thing is that half of them are destroyed and dirty inside, but the other half are so organised and clean, as if housekeeping had gone through recently, although they smell pretty bad. There are a few locals around the area who must be maintaining the rooms, though none of them are used, since there’s no running water or electricity in most.
The resort is completely deserted having a huge ghost cruise ship- The Galaxy, stranded on shore since 2016. This seven-deck, seventy bedroom used to be a cruiseliner which was then abandoned on the coast, eventually repurposed as a luxury hotel, and abandoned again! Locals call it the “ghost ship” (or don’t talk about it at all) because people have killed themselves by jumping of the top, and probably because it is creepy as hell.
A few years back one could actually stay on this ship-o-tel during their visit to this island! And it was quite affordable too- a room costed just 20 EUR/night. Currently, entering the Galaxy cruise ship is strictly prohibited and the fine amounts to 3000 baht!
