People visiting the beautiful state of Bihar will soon be able to witness the beauty of river Ganga in the best way! The state will soon launch two Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off) vessels allowing the visitors to enjoy river tourism along the Ganga river with services being offered in Bhagalpur and Patna.

River Tourism In India

River tourism in India is big! From the sacred rituals on the Ganges to the houseboat cruises in Kerala’s serene backwaters, and from the majestic Brahmaputra showcasing Assam's wildlife to the historical Hooghly River in Kolkata, these waterways provide unique and unforgettable experiences!

The Patna Ro-Ro Vessels service will begin in a week, but the Bhagalpur service is still awaiting approval from the Forest Department.

What To Expect?

The Digha Ghat – JP Ganga Path route will be used by the new Ro-Ro vessel service. This is done to encourage river tourism and allow residents and visitors to both appreciate the Ganga River’s beauty and the region’s distinctive biodiversity!

The vessel can carry 300 passengers at once and makes four to five voyages each day. With the opportunity to rent the entire ship for private events, those who want to try river cruises can now take advantage of this service.

As of now, the price of the tickets has not been fixed yet, but it is expected to be nominal, something on the lines of MV Ganga Vihar (approximately INR 300 per person), which is already operational in Patna since February, 2023.

The Bihar district of Bhagalpur is home to the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary. Making sure that the vessel service doesn't permanently disrupt the Gangetic dolphins’ environment is crucial, as Gangetic dolphins are an endangered species.

The sanctuary extends along the Ganges river and protects a section of water that is a vital habitat for these elusive freshwater dolphins.
