The first thing I realized as soon as I stepped into Bhutan is that I completely misjudged the place based on the pictures I had seen on the net. I thought its just a lot of small towns with a river passing by and a monastery beside that so 5 days is more than enough and I could not be more wrong. Bhutan is a place like no other, I am not saying it’s the most scenic place I have ever been to but it is definitely the most beautiful. As per rule the houses have to be designed in a similar way, everyone who is a government employee (which is 90% of the population) has to be dressed in the traditional attire, no honking and there are no traffic signals. That in itself makes this country so different but the whole concept of gross national happiness is so unique. I found the concept weird initially but the happiness of people in this small kingdom is genuine and contagious, it the eighth happiest country in the world. The people of Bhutan are the friendliest and nicest people I have ever met. Take time out experience Bhutan, its one of those places that you go as a traveler not a tourist and feel like making it your home.
If you are traveling from West Bengal then this is the border town where you get your permit done, takes half an hour and immigration office is right next to border gate. Indian citizens need a voter's id card for permit. Its a border town that looks more like India than Bhutan but a restaurant called perjorling you the first taste of Bhutan. There is a monastery on a peak if you have time to kill
I expected Thimpu to be a sleepy little hill town but as soon as you enter the city you see four lane highways and apartments (very traditional ones). They have resto bars and clubs and food in Bhutan Kitchen is to die for. Walk around the town and meet locals. Everyone is helpful without any hidden agenda. Visit the sites like Budha point for the view and the Takin reserve to see the national animal but just hanging around Thimpu is good fun
Paro is an hour drive from Thimpu and your first reaction would be that its a sleepy little town with great walks. The whole town comes alive at night, I could not believe that a town like Paro can have a nightlife, but its interesting to visit their live musicals and discos. The walk to the dzong and back to town alongside the river is beautiful. Do not stay in outskirts near the taktsang, stay in the town its so much cheaper and better
This is like the most identified image of Bhutan. Its the tiger nest monastery perched on top of a cliff, takes a 30 minute ride from Paro town and after that a rough 2 hour steep hike. Its worth every single sore muscle.
