Tired of the old-fashioned passport that takes forever to get, is easy to lose, and can be tampered with? Or do you wish you had a passport that could store your personal details, protect them from hackers, and make your travel easier?

Well, you're in luck because Bengaluru will launch the chip-enabled e-passport by the end of this year. This means you can get your passport in a day or two instead of waiting for a week. That's right, you heard it here first! Read on to learn more about this futuristic travel document.

What is an e-passport?

An e-passport is like a regular passport but with a twist. It has a small electronic chip inside, like your driver's license. The chip holds all your important information, like your name, date of birth, address, and photo. This way, you don't have to worry about losing your passport or someone tampering with it. The chip also makes it easier for immigration officials to verify your identity and scan your ticket.

How to apply for an e-passport?

Applying for an e-passport is as easy as pie. And here's how you can get yours in a snap. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Go to the Passport Seva website and create an account or log in with your existing one.

2. Choose whether you want a fresh passport or a re-issue of your old one.

3. Fill in all the details and submit the form.

4. Pay the fee and book an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) or Passport Office (PO).

5. Show up at the PSK/POPSK/PO with your receipt or SMS confirmation and complete your biometrics.

Voila! You're done. Your e-passport will be delivered to your doorstep in no time.

How do e-passports work?

An e-passport works on the magic of the rectangular antenna-type electronic chip inside it. The chip has a 64-kilobyte storage capacity, enough to hold all your data. The chip follows the international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), so you can use your e-passport anywhere. The chip also has security features that prevent anyone from accessing your data without your permission. You can rest assured that your e-passport is safe and smart.

Did you know?

More than 120 countries in the world use e-passports. Some of them are Ireland, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. India is joining this club soon, thanks to Bengaluru's initiative.
