Assam, a beautiful state in northeast India, is the first state I explored since my hometown is 5 hours away from Guwahati. I was amazed by the captivating blend of natural beauty, wildlife, cultural heritage, adventure, and warm hospitality.
To increase tourism in this state, The Government has approved the first underwater rail-road tunnel in Assam under the Brahmaputra River, which will be constructed between Numaligarh and Gohpur. This project is estimated at Rs 6,000 crores and will facilitate improved accessibility and enhance the overall tourism experience in the region.
How will the tunnel benefit us?
●The construction of the underwater tunnel will allow tourists to travel seamlessly between Numaligarh and Gohpur, reducing the distance of 220 km, which used to take 5-6 hours, to a mere 33 km which can be covered in 40 minutes.
●This direct and efficient connection will save time and effort for travellers like us and will help to explore and enjoy the attractions of both locations more conveniently.
● We will have the unique opportunity to witness the breathtaking underwater world, in the Brahmaputra River. This captivating experience is likely to attract adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts, enhancing the tourism potential of the region.
● The underwater tunnel will contribute to the growth of tourism-related infrastructure in Assam. The improved connectivity will encourage the development of hotels, resorts, and other facilities in both Numaligarh and Gohpur, providing visitors with a wider range of accommodation and entertainment options and boosting local economies.
● The tunnel will also help reduce travel time to Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
The proposed tunnels will be constructed using tunnel boring machines and may take around two to two-and-a-half years to complete after the work starts as per reports.
