Amritsar – makkah for foodies
We’ll all good blogs talk highly about Amritsar food. I was super excited to visit this place but my take is this is highly hyped city when it comes to food.
These are few worth mentioning joints
1. Brother dhaba
You have 2 brothers dhaba , chhota bhai and bada bhai. Food was ok but nothing out of the World. We tried Amritsari kulcha, Paneer paratha thali and lassi.
2. Kesar da dhaba
After mediocre experience at brothers dhaba we decided to try kesar dhaba. When we reached , there was a waiting so somehow I thought place must be very good. We ordered few things like lachha paratha, naan ,palak paneer , paneer masala, baigan bharta, daal makhni and lassi ( don’t even doubt on our appetite). Paratha was very good but rest of things were strictly ok. Curries were too pungent which unfortunately overpowering actual taste of vegetable. Like if I would hv eaten palak paneer with blind eyes , I wouldn’t have recognised it as palak paneer.
It was another mediocre experience.
3. Makkan fish
We have been eating Amritsari fish outside Amritsar all these years so it’s mandatory to taste it while in Amritsar. There are few joints like bubbu fish and Makkan fish where we were told to try fish fry. We tried shingada fish and another disappointment came our way. Strictly okish. I have had better Amritsari fish in Mumbai (Linking road sardarji joint) and Nagpur ( barbecue Sadar bazar). However cocktail they served were very good.
4. Bira Chicken House
Known for its roast chicken (chicken tandoori) and it was good. It was without any artificial colour and perfectly roasted. We also tried butter chicken which was way too different from what we get in Mumbai/ Pune restaurants ,it was topped up with white Makhan and was good. They serve kheema stuffed naan which was worth trying
Overall we were very happy with this place.
5. Street food
We wanted to try some street food near Golden Temple so one evening we just had food hopping. Few worth mentioning joints
- Gurdasram jalebiwale
It’s a heritage shop and you get hot jalebis and gulab jamun.
- Taste of Rajastha
Sounds strange isn't it. Rajasthan in Punjab...but Aloo tikki was good really good here.
- Lassi
Finally we got malai wala lassi. Another hidden gem. Sudarshan Milk Centre.
- Kulfi
Well A1 kulfa is very famous which we couldn’t try but this kulfi was not bad either
We did try sweet potato chat, ram laddu and panipuri. They were okish.
Our regret was we couldn’t try saag and makke ki roti, gajar ka halva, pinni while there in Amritsar. However I'm still with an opinion food that we got on roadside dhaba Was way too better than some renowned joints that we tried
We tried Parantha and dal at roadside Vaishnav Dhaba , it was finger licking.
Also do try ganne ka juices, very very different from what we get in Mumbai or Pune. it is more of ganne ka cocktail. they include Ginger pudina and orange while extracting juice from ganna (sugarcane)
